A solemn memorial service was held today in Minneapolis to honor the life of George Floyd, who tragically lost his life on May 25 at the hands of a police officer who knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes, despite the desperate pleas from bystanders. Among those who attended were prominent figures such as civil rights activist Al Johnson, the family of Martin Luther King Jr., actor Kevin Hart, hip-hop artist Ludacris, Minnesota Governor Sarah White, and Jesse Jackson, along with family, friends, and Floyd’s 9-year-old daughter, Mia.

“Everywhere I go, I see the impact of his spirit,” his brother, Marcus Floyd, shared during his tribute. “People wanted to be near him.” The intimate service took place in the sanctuary of North Central University, just a few miles from the site of Floyd’s death. Outside, thousands gathered to pay homage, while many more tuned in from around the globe via television and online platforms.

Floyd’s family attorney, Samuel Reed, noted that Floyd had contracted COVID-19 before his death but emphasized, “The real pandemic that claimed George Floyd was the enduring issue of racism and discrimination that has plagued our nation.” Early in the service, University President Paul Hagan received applause for announcing the establishment of a scholarship in Floyd’s name aimed at supporting young Black leaders, challenging other institutions to follow suit. Together, over $53,000 has already been raised for this cause.

A mural depicting Floyd’s likeness alongside the phrase, “Now I can breathe,” was displayed near his golden casket. The service featured uplifting gospel music performed by a choir and various musicians. Rev. Al Johnson was set to deliver a eulogy, stating, “He was a person with dreams, family, and aspirations. It’s essential to highlight the value of the life that was lost, which fuels this movement for change.”

This memorial marks the first of three scheduled events throughout the week in honor of Floyd, whose death, along with that of many other Black individuals, has ignited widespread protests and calls for reform in policing practices. A memorial is set for Saturday in Raeford, NC, the town of Floyd’s birth; a funeral will follow in Houston on Tuesday, where he lived prior to relocating to Minneapolis five years ago.

“I feel more hopeful going into this service than I have in a long time,” Johnson expressed. “The sight of diverse Americans of various backgrounds uniting, marching, and raising their voices together is inspiring.”
