In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney World, along with Disneyland, made an unprecedented move by closing its gates. However, as the country begins to emerge from lockdown, Disney World has revealed its plans to reopen in July, albeit with numerous alterations to the experience visitors once knew.
As reported by popular sources, the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando has submitted a detailed proposal to the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force. While the county mayor has given the green light, the final approval from the governor is still pending. If all goes according to plan, the parks will see a phased reopening that will dramatically change the guest experience.
Phased Reopening Schedule
According to Lucas Harper, Senior Vice President of Operations, both the Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom will welcome guests back starting July 11, 2020, followed by Epcot and Hollywood Studios on July 15, 2020. Initially, there will be a “soft opening” to allow for adjustments and to address any issues that may arise. Not surprisingly, safety protocols will be a high priority; visitors will undergo temperature screenings at the entrance, and masks will be mandatory.
New Safety Measures
Attendance will also be limited, requiring guests to secure reservations through a new online system. Furthermore, capacity will be reduced at attractions, restaurants, retail spaces, and transportation methods. To enhance the safety measures, Disney plans to promote mobile food ordering and install additional plexiglass barriers to minimize contact between guests and staff.
Changes to Attractions
One of the most noteworthy changes that might disappoint some guests is the cancellation of parades, fireworks displays, play areas for children, and in-person character meet-and-greets. To facilitate compliance with these new guidelines, Disney is introducing a “social distance squad.” This enthusiastic team of cast members will be on hand to encourage guests to adhere to social distancing protocols. A similar approach has already been successfully implemented at Disney Springs, which reopened on May 20.
Other Theme Parks Reopening
Universal Orlando is scheduled to resume operations on June 5, followed by SeaWorld Orlando on June 11. Although the Florida theme parks may not resemble the experiences of the past, this news represents a cautious step toward regaining a sense of normalcy.
