The holiday season is a time for generosity, and Aldi, the budget grocery giant from Germany, is stepping up to ensure that everyone can enjoy a joyful Christmas. This year, Aldi stores globally are reaching out to local charities to assist in collecting surplus fresh food donations after closing on Christmas Eve.
This initiative marks the third consecutive year that Aldi has contributed leftover groceries on Christmas Eve. Earlier in the year, the chain teamed up with Neighbourly, a startup that connects businesses with local nonprofits, to facilitate grocery donations year-round. However, the Christmas Eve event is their most significant charitable effort, with each store expected to have 20 to 30 crates of surplus food available for collection.
“As Aldi’s doors will close at 4 PM on Christmas Eve and remain shut until December 27, there will be an assortment of high-quality surplus food products ready to be redistributed to support those in need and reduce food waste,” the company stated in a recent press release.
The Christmas Eve program promises a wealth of fresh produce, including fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, and baked goods. Items that are nearing their expiration at closing time will be available for donation. Charitable organizations often struggle to keep fresh food on their shelves, as donations typically lean toward non-perishable items.
Last year, Aldi’s generous donations provided nearly half a million holiday meals to families in need, and this year, they aim to surpass that number. Marcus Green, the Director of Community Engagement at Aldi UK, expressed enthusiasm for expanding the program, especially as Aldi continues to open more stores worldwide.
“We’re really passionate about our Christmas food donation initiative,” he shared. “We partnered with Neighbourly this year to connect as many stores with local charities as possible. Last year, we helped thousands of people, and some charities were even able to prepare fresh meals that fed families well into the New Year. We hope to replicate that success this year and foster future collaborations with food banks and charities.”
With the success of Aldi’s Christmas Eve donation program, it’s our hope that other grocery retailers will follow suit. Every family deserves a festive meal, and this initiative helps spread that joy across more tables.
