Empowering Boys to Safeguard Women: A New Approach to Parenting

In light of the #MeToo movement and the troubling stories that have emerged, I find myself reflecting on how my own experiences with harassment shape my approach to raising my sons. They currently bound around the park, full of unrestrained energy, resembling a pack of playful puppies. But I know that one day they’ll wander off on their own to the mall or the city, and I need to equip them for that world.

My boys are already a formidable group, and soon they will grow into young men. Their presence may unintentionally intimidate others, particularly women. This reality underscores the urgency of my role as their parent while they are still impressionable and receptive to my guidance.

I don’t fear that my sons will become predators, but I do want them to be aware of the historical injustices that women have faced, largely at the hands of men. It is essential for all boys to engage in the necessary work to challenge these patterns. Thus, I am committed to imparting valuable lessons to them.

I teach them not only the basics, like respecting personal boundaries, but also the nuanced behaviors that foster a culture of respect. For instance, I explain that in a two-seater, they should leave space between themselves and others. If they’re walking up stairs behind someone, they should maintain distance. On a crowded train, they should angle their bodies to avoid being overly close. These small gestures can make a significant difference.

While we discuss serious topics like consent and the realities of sexual assault, it’s vital that we also teach our boys how to apply these concepts in their daily interactions. They might grasp the idea that men hold more power in society, yet they need to understand their role in leveling that playing field. This is where we come in as parents, empowering them with practical knowledge.

It’s insufficient to merely instruct them to avoid inappropriate behavior; we must guide them in making thoughtful choices that either contribute to or dismantle a culture of intimidation. Encourage them to recognize when a girl is not interested, such as if she is absorbed in a book or wearing headphones. Teach them to consider crossing the street if they encounter a woman alone in a narrow space—not because they are a threat, but to acknowledge the historical context of their presence.

Inspire them to extend the camaraderie they feel with teammates to their female peers, co-workers, and neighbors. Celebrate their respectful actions and highlight positive male role models. Encourage them to intervene when they witness inappropriate behavior, reinforcing the idea that we all have a part to play in nurturing a safer environment for everyone.

The path forward isn’t merely about stopping harmful behavior; it’s also about guiding good men to become even better allies. In summary, empowering our sons to be conscious allies in creating a respectful world for women is a critical endeavor. Through practical lessons and proactive guidance, we can foster a generation of men who contribute positively to societal change.
