Confidence in My 40s: A Newfound Empowerment

I currently own about five bikinis. Not because I believe I look particularly great in them, but rather because they provide more comfort than one-piece swimsuits, which tend to ride up and offer inadequate support for my bust. After a day at the beach, I often find myself dealing with back pain, discomfort, and general irritability.

Bikinis also make it easier to enter the ocean and adjust as needed, allowing me to wash away sand after building castles with my children. In my teenage years and even during my pre-motherhood days, you wouldn’t catch me in a bikini unless I was sunbathing in a secluded spot behind a building where I wouldn’t be seen.

While one-pieces may conceal more of my perceived imperfections, I’ve come to realize that this newfound self-assurance is among the greatest gifts I’ve received since turning 40—a delightful surprise that I didn’t anticipate. Now, I celebrate this by purchasing a bikini whenever one catches my eye, without the hassle of trying it on; who wants to endure that ordeal?

My younger self expected that reaching 40 would mean I’d want cosmetic procedures to lift and tighten various body parts. I thought for sure I’d be seeking fillers and botox to smooth out any lines. However, that’s not how this journey has unfolded. I’m no longer fixated solely on my appearance, which is why I embrace my gray hair, fine lines, and the reality that my rear has sagged a couple of inches.

This shift in mindset is liberating. The confidence that grows with age enables women to dismiss nonsense in all its forms. With years of experience, I’ve learned to value genuine relationships and the comfort of well-fitting pants over superficial concerns. The fact that my breasts aren’t as perky as they used to be matters far less than my 20-year-old self anticipated.

Reaching this stage in life is an absolute revelation—a time I once feared would leave me feeling diminished every time I glimpsed my reflection. Instead, I feel more vibrant and alive than ever.

Women with over four decades of life experience can detect insincerity from a mile away and can foresee potential pitfalls. They have the wisdom to prevent negative situations from affecting them. With a history of compromising their values to please others, many women now prioritize their own beliefs and happiness, finding strength in saying no.

Most of us have encountered fake friends, disappointing food, and inauthentic experiences, leading us to appreciate the value of authenticity. We’d choose solitude over settling for less, and this realization radiates an inner glow. Ultimately, honoring oneself has become the new form of allure.

Looking back, I remember when I was a small child, celebrating myself without hesitation—until societal pressures taught me to suppress my authentic voice, to laugh quietly, and to refrain from expressing discomfort. I became overly concerned with my appearance and how I measured up against others, allowing my mood to be dictated by external opinions rather than my own.

It can take time to rediscover that inner strength after years of it being diminished. But once you reconnect, you realize just how much you’ve missed that true self. You’ll be determined not to return to a life of compromising for acceptance.

Discussing the confidence that accompanies turning 40 has been a frequent topic among my friends. We often find ourselves surprised, as we once believed these years would be a time of decline and loss of joy. Instead, we’re discovering that life is only getting started, and I’m grateful to have retained just the right amount of cares to celebrate my imperfect self.
