The Significance of Being a Faithful American and a Devoted Christian

In recent weeks, an emotional moment arose when a popular musician performed the National Anthem at a major sporting event. It stirred a deep sense of pride within me, not only for the artist but also for the values embodied in our national song. I was raised to hold immense respect for our flag, our country, and the brave service members who protect it. My family has a rich military history, with many veterans among us who instilled this pride. Whenever the anthem plays, we stand united, hands over our hearts, honoring the sacrifices made for our freedom.

Furthermore, I have great respect for law enforcement. I teach my children to seek help from police officers when they are in distress. I truly believe that the majority of them are dedicated individuals committed to serving and protecting our communities, often at great personal risk.

While I am not a gun owner myself, I understand that many in my circle rely on firearms for hunting and personal protection. I wholeheartedly support their rights to do so, as long as these weapons are secured and handled responsibly. However, I must clarify my stance on the broader issue of gun control, particularly regarding weapons like the AR-15. The repeated tragedies involving mass shootings—often affecting innocent children—are unacceptable, and I stand with those advocating for necessary reforms to keep our communities safe.

As a Christian, I believe in the teachings of Jesus and strive to impart those values to my children. This includes advocating for the rights of the LGBTQ community, ensuring they live without fear, marry freely, and raise families. I have family members who identify as gay and transgender, and we embrace them with love and acceptance, as I believe that kindness and grace define our faith.

I am aware of the biblical teachings surrounding marriage, but my interpretation is rooted in love, much like the example set by Jesus. He reached out to marginalized individuals, demonstrating that love transcends societal norms. The thought of teaching my children to judge others based on whom they love is unfathomable to me.

It deeply saddens me to witness instances of racial injustice, such as the tragic shootings of individuals like Philando Castile and Tamir Rice. Such events highlight the urgent need for change in our society, and as a devoted Christian and patriotic American, I stand in solidarity with those advocating for justice and equality.

My faith and love for this nation compel me to support reforms that benefit all Americans, regardless of their background. I believe in uniting with individuals of various faiths, including Muslims, Jews, and Buddhists, to foster a safer and more compassionate society.

I am multifaceted, embodying various identities that coexist harmoniously. As a proud American Christian, I embrace the complexities of life. I enjoy the occasional drink and may not attend church every Sunday, but my commitment to loving my neighbors and assisting those in need remains unwavering. I recognize my privilege and strive to uplift others, advocating for equal opportunities for all children, regardless of their race, gender, or background.

In my experience of living in different states, I’ve learned the importance of finding inclusive communities. When we seek out places of worship, we prioritize those that welcome everyone—truly, every individual.

Thus, when I stand for the flag or bow my head in prayer, I ask that you do not associate me with those who misuse the Bible or patriotism to promote hatred or exclusion. That is not representative of my beliefs, nor of what I understand being American to mean. If you choose to label me a liberal snowflake, so be it; I embrace the snow in Wisconsin.
