A mom recently posted a side-splitting letter her son penned to Santa, and it’s taking the internet by storm. While many young children are enamored with the idea of Santa Claus and the Elf on the Shelf, not every child shares that enthusiasm—or belief, for that matter. This particular six-year-old, however, took his skepticism to a new level with a brutally honest letter that has everyone in stitches.

Jamie Thompson shared her son’s school assignment on Twitter, where students were tasked with writing a note to Santa. What her son delivered was nothing short of epic. His letter, complete with endearing spelling mistakes, read: “Dear Santa, I’m only doing this for the class. I know your notty list is emty. And your good list is emty. and your life is emty. You don’t know the troubles I’ve had in my life. Good bye.” He even signed off with “I’m not telling you my name” and drew wreaths and skulls around the edges.

This little boy certainly knows how to pack a punch with only a few sentences! Thompson humorously noted that the “troubles” he referenced are pretty mild and not really worth mentioning to Santa.

Twitter users quickly rallied around the post, sharing their own stories of kids with similarly bleak perspectives on Santa and life.

As a mother of a son who often concludes his journal entries with “well this is where it ends,” I can relate to Thompson on a deep level. Raising a child who questions the ordinary and sees beyond the fairy-tale facade of life can be both exhausting and enlightening. It’s refreshing, though, to witness a child who perceives the world with a hint of adult-like realism, and it certainly brings laughter.

While there has yet to be a response from Santa, we can only imagine he’s taking a moment to reflect on his life choices after receiving such a straightforward letter. But don’t worry, Santa! There are still plenty of children and adults who believe in the magic you bring, even if this insightful kid has figured out part of the ruse.
