Oh, my dear, what a fascinating time you are growing up in. The opportunities available to women today are unprecedented. Together, we witnessed a woman campaign for the presidency (and win), and I could see that my words about being able to achieve anything might actually hold truth for you.

Significant changes are unfolding. Barriers that once felt insurmountable are being dismantled. Societal norms that have long gone unchallenged are now facing scrutiny. We see the courage of women coming forward, exposing the injustices they’ve endured. A shift is occurring, albeit gradually.

Women are claiming their space in the spotlight. However, we continue to grapple with familiar challenges. Just because we are on stage does not mean we are fully embraced there. Daily, I witness women being judged for reasons unrelated to their capabilities. We endure this ourselves, and even worse, we sometimes inflict it upon one another. It seems we are still expected to excel while maintaining flawless appearances and gentle demeanors.

I understand how bewildering this must be for you—it’s perplexing for me, too. In a world where we are constantly bombarded with false standards of worth—our appearance, social media likes, professional titles, and material possessions—I want to share an important lesson I’m only just beginning to grasp: None of these external validations matter if you cannot find peace with who you are. Ultimately, the only thing that truly matters is your relationship with yourself.

Your true sanctuary lies within, and while your father and I may have laid the groundwork, you are the one who has built your home. You’ve filled it with your aspirations, and its light shines brightly with your spirit. We might visit, and I hope we do, but the primary residents are always you and your higher self.

From this place of self-acceptance, you will rise, overcome obstacles, and make meaningful changes in the world. So, when doubt, fear, or those misleading standards try to invade your thoughts, remember that I am immensely proud of all you’ve achieved and all that lies ahead. But here’s the truth about being your mother: my love for you is unconditional, regardless of your accomplishments. I love you, no matter what.

This unwavering love is what I hope you can carry within you. Use it to strengthen your inner home, patch the cracks, and guard against negativity. Let it ignite a warmth in your heart that sustains you long after you’ve stepped out of my embrace. Most importantly, I hope you learn to cultivate that same love for yourself—an unshakeable affection that disregards superficial judgments.

It’s the kind of love I wish I had embraced myself, and it’s the most genuine gift I can give you. I’m not a perfect mother, but I can offer you this. Stand atop my shoulders, dear Emma, and claim your rightful place on that stage. You truly belong there.

With all my love,
Mom
