What Educators Truly Need but Aren’t Receiving

In a world where extinction looms closer each day, we face not only the loss of wildlife but also a vital group of professionals: teachers with a significant degree of autonomy. Much like endangered species, these educators thrive in specific environments, yet they are becoming increasingly rare.

Gone are the days when every neighborhood had teachers who engaged with their students in unique and memorable ways—those who would stop to explore a child’s intriguing question or take their class outside to marvel at the first snowflakes. These are the educators who create captivating projects that spark joy in learning and make mornings easier for parents because their children can’t wait to get to school.

Your child’s once-enthusiastic teacher may now seem more restrained and rigid, but it’s not due to a lack of passion or creativity. The joy they once found in teaching has been stifled by years of dwindling professional freedom. Fearful of job security, they adhere to strict guidelines, teach to standardized tests, and manage restless students. Yet deep down, they know that letting kids play outside more often could significantly boost their focus in class.

At back-to-school night, your child’s teacher puts on a cheerful face, concealing the reality that the essence of teaching has been eroded over time. As she drives home, she contemplates whether early retirement might be an option since her expertise is no longer valued by the powers that be, who question how much of her role could be replaced by technology.

While she used to have the freedom to design her lessons independently, today she finds herself reading from a prescribed script. The imaginative activities that once inspired first-graders are now deemed obsolete.

Time for a Movement

It’s time for a movement of “scary mommies” to rise up and advocate for these teachers, who are unable to voice their struggles without jeopardizing their livelihoods. Take a moment to connect with a teacher or two over coffee—ask them about their experiences. Are they limited to teaching to a test? Can they pause planned lessons for meaningful discussions? Are they permitted to extend recess? How often can they use their own creativity in the classroom?

If you find that your local educators still enjoy a degree of autonomy, be sure to express your gratitude to the school board and encourage your community to recognize that freedom is not extinct in your area. Unfortunately, only 12% of teachers report having high levels of professional freedom, leaving the majority constrained by regulations.

The Importance of Advocacy

Advocating for teachers’ autonomy is not just about them; it’s about your child’s right to a fulfilling educational experience filled with exploration and joy. By supporting teachers, you are fostering an environment where children can thrive, filled with curiosity and eagerness to learn.

Summary

Teachers with significant autonomy are becoming increasingly rare. Many are forced to conform to strict guidelines that limit their creativity and ability to engage students. Advocating for their professional freedom is essential for fostering an enriching educational environment that benefits students.
