I recently had a revelation about what “activewear” really means. My epiphany struck in the aisles of a T.J.Maxx when I noticed the leggings, tanks, sports bras, and tees were distinctly separated from sundresses and capris—the kind of attire one might wear to celebrate a birthday at a chain restaurant. Until that moment, I simply thought of “activewear” as “clothes.” After all, I’m the kind of person who wears stretchy fabrics daily, not just for workouts—which, let’s face it, I hardly ever do.
Critics often claim that activewear should be reserved for exercise, but as a parent, I argue that parenting itself is inherently active. I have no intention of trading in my beloved leggings and tank tops. Friends and family members frequently suggest I should try makeover shows, and while a hefty budget for a chic jacket or a pair of dress jeans sounds tempting, I know I’d just end up back in my cozy hoodie from Goodwill. Sure, it has a broken zipper, but it’s soft and carries nostalgia—it’s Abercrombie from ages ago, and I’m not parting with it.
The merits of my activewear are numerous. Frankly, I can’t fathom why everyone isn’t living in it. I could thrive in a daily outfit of elastic-waist capris, a moisture-wicking tee, and comfy sneakers. A quick ponytail, a headband, and I’m set—especially when I’m trying to wrestle my daughter into a romper after her 29 outfit changes before breakfast, all while already running late.
For me, athletic wear serves as inspiration. Every Monday, I promise myself to start a new, restrictive diet that eliminates all my favorite foods in a bid to reach my ideal weight by Friday. I tell myself that if I dress the part, my chances of hitting the gym will drastically improve. It’s like faking it until you make it, except I’m more inclined to fill up on pastries than actual exercise.
Speaking of food, my friends are mostly gluten-free, dairy-free, and sugar-free, while I embrace all those delicious things. I adore cooking, and since my baking experiments often go unshared, I find myself indulging a bit too much, leading to the occasional post-cookie bloating.
My weight fluctuates, and on days when I don’t feel my best, I rely on elastic fabric to conceal a multitude of sins. Sure, makeover show hosts might disagree, but I refuse to squeeze into tight pants and prance around in high heels after devouring a large burrito.
Believe it or not, I actually frequent yoga studios—mostly for their adorable apparel. How could I resist mermaid-print leggings paired with a tank that reads “Nama-Slay”? These outfits allow me to look cute and comfortable while spreading positivity to everyone around me.
Yoga wear is my go-to for dressy occasions, far more sensible than a sundress and Spanx. Honestly, I have no desire to deal with buttons or zippers, especially when I’d rather savor a plate of bolognese than fret about my spaghetti straps.
I don’t head to the playground with my daughter and her friends to strike poses in flowy linen dresses under a picturesque tree. I’d rather tumble down a hill with laughter than sit on a bench worried about ruining my outfit.
These bike shorts may not win any fashion awards, but they were perfect for a hiking trip during a heat wave. When we splashed through the stream, I didn’t fret about damaging silk. Have you ever had to extricate a child from a mud pit or suddenly pull over to frolic in a sunflower field? Trust me, high-waisted compression pants are far more practical than a blazer.
Parenting can be messy, and I don’t want to juggle groceries, clean up spills, or cook dinner in a stylish, beaded dress. I might not always look put together, but I can drop to the floor for an epic game of Candy Land in an instant. I can transition from watercolor painting to backyard relay races in no time and then joyfully run through the sprinkler with my daughter and her friends until we’re soaked and giggling.
While my activewear might not be runway-ready, it empowers me to embrace life on my terms. I can be spontaneous, playful, and, yes, enjoy all my favorite foods. You might not think that a few pairs of leggings and tank tops could enhance my parenting, but I wholeheartedly believe they do. I have no plans to give up my activewear, and I’m eternally grateful for the magic of elastic.
Summary:
Activewear has become an essential part of my daily life, especially as a parent. It offers comfort and practicality, allowing for spontaneity in parenting while also serving as a source of inspiration. I embrace the versatility of leggings and tanks, which enable me to move freely and enjoy life without the constraints of traditional outfits.
