Embracing Identity: Teaching My Preschooler to Celebrate Her Blackness

Absolutely, I’m teaching my preschooler to embrace her identity as a proud Black girl. Why, you ask? Because I am a Black woman who once navigated the complexities of being a little Black girl in a world that often overlooks her experiences. I’ve attended both predominantly white and predominantly Black schools, which has shaped my understanding of race in profound ways. While I appreciate these experiences, I can’t help but feel frustrated that they were necessary.

The Questions We Face

Why should a 5-year-old have to justify her hair to her peers? Why does a 10-year-old need to explain why she speaks a certain way to her classmates? Why does a 17-year-old face questions from her community about her educational choices? The truth is, in America, people of color often find themselves answering questions about their identity from others—both similar and different from them—starting just after they enter the world.

Instilling Self-Love and Pride

Given this reality, I am committed to instilling a sense of self-love and pride in my children. And frankly, I don’t care what anyone thinks. If you’re upset that I choose to buy my kids Black dolls, that’s your issue. If my daughter wears a head wrap or sports a tee with slang you don’t understand, that’s just fine. If it bothers you that my child celebrates her melanin, or if you think I go overboard by reading books by Black authors in her class, I’ll continue to do it anyway.

I must prepare my children to recognize and celebrate their Blackness, providing them with the confidence to handle questions and comments about their identity. This confidence took me years to develop, and it’s crucial for them to have it from an early age. It’s important to clarify that being pro-Black doesn’t mean being anti-anything else. The motivation to promote Black representation stems from the glaring absence of it in many areas of life.

Empowerment Through Representation

Is it possible to nurture self-love in our children while respecting others? Absolutely. So, the next time you see my child proudly wearing her melanin ABC shirt, remember that it’s about empowerment.

Supporting Our Community

By the way, EB is also showcasing items from Black-owned businesses. Yes, I’m teaching her the importance of supporting our community as well.
