On June 2, we unite to Wear Orange in memory of those lost to gun violence. This movement was ignited by the tragic shooting of 15-year-old Maya Thompson, whose untimely death transformed her friends and family into passionate advocates for change. They chose to don orange, a color symbolizing the protection of lives, to elevate awareness about the daily toll of gun violence in the United States.

Statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveal that on an average day, 93 individuals fall victim to gun violence. Maya was among them, struck by a stray bullet in a senseless act of violence. Her mother, Linda Thompson, reminisced about her daughter’s vibrant spirit, saying, “Maya had an infectious laugh and a remarkable knack for storytelling.” An accomplished student and performer, Maya had even showcased her talents at a national ceremony.

In the wake of her loss, Maya’s friends initiated a campaign to “Wear Orange,” inspired by hunters who wear bright colors for safety. They aimed to protect human life and to advocate for a world free from gun violence. Over the years, this effort has blossomed into numerous events nationwide, rallying support to honor victims and encourage constructive dialogue about solutions. Celebrities such as former President Barack Obama and actress Julianne Moore have publicly supported the cause, further amplifying its reach.

According to Taylor Maxwell, spokesperson for Everytown for Gun Safety, “This day serves as a moment of remembrance and a call to action. We must recognize that together, we can find solutions and create a safer society.” The emotional weight of gun violence affects everyone; it’s not just the families of victims who feel its impact, but communities that share in the grief. Linda urges participation in the Wear Orange initiative, stating, “Gun violence knows no boundaries. It can touch anyone, and we must stand united against it.”
