Empowerment knows no age.

For many toddlers, dressing up is a beloved pastime. However, when little Lily Adams dons her costumes, she isn’t pretending to be a princess. With her mother’s creative guidance, she embodies renowned female figures who have made an impact in the world. Their photo sessions are as uplifting for them as they are for all of us.

Lily’s outfits are carefully crafted and photographed with the support of her mom, Sarah Adams. Sarah shares Lily’s looks on Instagram, where they have gained a following of over 30,000, largely thanks to the hashtag #LilyStoleMyStyle. Recently, writing for a parenting blog, Sarah shared that the inspiration for Lily’s project came after her mother, Lily’s Grandma, received a cancer diagnosis. “When Grandma started losing her hair, Lily became worried. I wanted us both to feel comforted,” Sarah explains. “I needed to remind her that women are warriors! We chose to celebrate famous, strong women to teach her about the resilience we possess.” Who needs a crown when you can emulate Ruth Bader Ginsburg?

Sarah and Lily dedicated nearly a year to this project—during the same timeframe Grandma underwent chemotherapy and a double mastectomy. Each time they recreated a powerful woman’s image, Sarah took the opportunity to teach Lily about her significance. Yet, throughout the process, Sarah emphasized the importance of Lily being herself. “I encourage her to embrace her individuality,” she says. “No matter what, I think she’s incredible.”

The plan was to compile a photobook of all of Lily’s portrayals to present to Grandma after her treatment. This thoughtful gift not only uplifted her grandmother’s spirits but also helped both Lily and Sarah navigate the emotional challenges of Grandma’s health journey. “The entire endeavor was a blessing for both of us,” Sarah reflects. “Presenting the final product to my mom was priceless. Every moment spent planning, styling, shooting, and editing was absolutely worthwhile.”

The best part? Grandma is now cancer-free and naturally, Lily had to recreate a look inspired by her personal hero.

What started as a way to cope with a serious diagnosis transformed into a much larger project for this mother-daughter duo. Sarah notes that she has learned just as much, if not more, than Lily through this experience. “I want Lily to look back on this and know that women are just as strong as men,” she shares. Sarah hopes that in the future, all women will be recognized for their strength and power, just like the icons Lily dresses as. “I genuinely hope that by the time she understands the strength she is portraying, women will no longer be seen as delicate and dainty. I want her to feel proud of who she is and who she will become.”
