One mom took an unexpected turn of events in stride when her baby arrived alongside her apparently ineffective IUD.
Despite a Mirena IUD boasting over 99 percent efficacy in preventing pregnancy, there’s always that slim chance of an unexpected surprise. This was the case for Alabama resident Sarah Johnson, who had her Mirena placed last August. Imagine her shock when, four months later, she discovered she was expecting.
“This was actually my third Mirena; the first two were flawless,” she shared with Metro.co.uk. “I found out I was pregnant in December and, to be honest, I was terrified because of the Mirena. I assumed I was only a few weeks along, but the ultrasound revealed I was already 18 weeks pregnant. The Mirena was nowhere in sight on the ultrasound, so my OB thought it had fallen out, but I had my doubts.”
As it turned out, the IUD had simply migrated within her uterus and was safely hidden behind the placenta. When her son, Oliver, was delivered via C-section, the doctor managed to retrieve the elusive IUD as well. For her birth announcement, Johnson humorously placed the IUD in her baby’s hand and snapped a picture, tagging it with “#mirenaoops.”
While Oliver wasn’t part of the original plan, Johnson and her partner, who already had children, embraced their new addition wholeheartedly. “Oliver was definitely meant to be,” she remarked. “His original due date was May 4th, and even the doctor joked, ‘The force was strong with this one.’” She added, “Despite the surprise, my family feels incredibly blessed.”
However, Johnson is taking her family planning seriously now. After Oliver’s birth, she opted to have one of her Fallopian tubes removed, ensuring she won’t fall into the <1 percent failure rate of the Mirena again.
