My children are always eager to fill me in on the latest trends. They assume that since I often wear leggings and don’t tune into the Top 40, my sense of style is totally out of touch. Sure, my fashion might not be on point, and I might not recognize popular artists, but I can still recite every line from “Rapper’s Delight.”
Taking advantage of my retro vibe, my kids love to “introduce” me to what they think are new toys. They genuinely believe they’ve uncovered the next big sensation, rescuing me from my cultural ignorance. Ironically, many of these so-called “new” toys are the very ones I enjoyed in my own childhood. As they say, what goes around comes around!
Rubik’s Cube
At the moment, my kids are totally into the Rubik’s Cube. Modern versions come in all sorts of unusual shapes — there’s even a triangular one that leaves me dizzy! A few moments of twisting and turning have me wanting to toss it across the room, but it can keep my kids entertained for a while (okay, maybe just a few minutes, but I’ll take it).
Spirograph
I adored my Spirograph as a kid, so I was excited when my son received one a few months back. There’s something strangely meditative about making intricate, flowery designs that I can’t quite put into words.
My Little Pony
Who didn’t love My Little Ponies growing up? If you didn’t, we might not be able to be friends. I was completely obsessed, and I’m thrilled they’re back in style — and not just for girls! Personally, I aspire to be Princess Twilight Sparkle someday. #Goals
Mad Libs
On long family road trips, I spent countless hours doing Mad Libs with my siblings, and now my kids enjoy the same fun. What’s not to love? It’s silly, entertaining, and even sneaks in some grammar lessons — even if their favorite nouns tend to be a bit immature!
This article originally shared my excitement for these classic toys, and it’s a joy to see them returning to favor.
