Starbucks is about to unveil a coffee lover’s paradise in Chicago. Imagine your local Starbucks transformed into a sprawling four-story wonderland filled with more coffee than you could ever drink! Who needs a simple entrance and a direct route to the register when you can explore 43,000 square feet of caffeinated delight?
Three decades ago, Starbucks opened its first store outside Seattle in Chicago. “This location was crucial, as its success paved the way for our global expansion,” said Starbucks Executive Chairman, Dave Thompson, in an interview with the Chicago Times. And succeed it did! As a token of gratitude, they are now creating a massive coffee destination in the historic Crate and Barrel Building along the Magnificent Mile.
Dubbed the “Reserve Roastery,” this is no ordinary Starbucks. It’s a venue where patrons can witness rare small-batch coffees being roasted, brewed, and packaged. You’ll definitely need a caffeine boost for that adventure, because it’s going to be anything but dull! Just kidding… sort of.
“It’s not just a coffee shop; it’s about the theatrical experience and the romance of coffee,” Thompson shared. He first envisioned the Roastery concept back in August 2009, when he described it as “the Willy Wonka of coffee.”
We all know Willy Wonka’s world is a bit chaotic, but rest assured, this Roastery will be safer—hopefully! This massive coffee amusement park will be the third Roastery in the U.S., following the first in Seattle and another set to open in NYC in 2018. However, none of those locations will compare to the sheer size of the one on the Magnificent Mile.
At my local Starbucks, people hardly bother to leave their cars. I can only imagine the scene of curious customers climbing four stories and enjoying their coffee in this magical space. Who wouldn’t want to explore this Narnia of coffee?
We are both excited and slightly nervous about this venture. It resembles Dr. Evil’s lair—if his lair had a lovely rooftop patio! More Roasteries are on the way, with future locations in Shanghai and plans for Milan and Tokyo in 2018, because there truly is one coffee to rule them all.
