Camping with Kids: An Unforgettable Affordable Adventure

My partner and I aren’t exactly swimming in wealth; there’s no treasure trove like Scrooge McDuck’s in our basement. We do, however, prioritize at least one family getaway each summer. But with the expenses of travel, dining out, and lodging, the costs can quickly escalate, leading to stress and even arguments. So, instead of traditional vacations, we embrace a more budget-friendly and enjoyable option for our little ones: camping.

I can’t say camping is my absolute favorite pastime. Last summer, I was kept awake by a creature poking around our tent right next to my head. Then there are pesky bugs and lukewarm coffee to contend with. But my children? They adore it. Absolutely love it, which makes it the perfect summer escape.

Typically, my kids aren’t allowed to play with dirt indoors or hurl stones around, but when we’re surrounded by nature, I let them revel in their freedom. They find joy in running wild outdoors—after all, when camping, the whole point is to be outside. There’s no room for me to say, “Hey kids, come inside to clean up.” Instead, during our camping trips, they can get as messy as they want, which is every child’s dream, right?

At home, their chores include tasks like making their beds, sweeping, taking out the trash, and tidying their rooms. But when we go camping, even those chores feel fresh and exciting! Taking out the trash morphs into a little adventure to the nearest dumpster. Making their beds is a breeze, just a quick adjustment of their sleeping bags. And sweeping? Not necessary! They even gain new responsibilities like gathering sticks for the campfire, hanging their swimsuits on trees to dry after swimming, and preparing marshmallows for dessert. Everything feels thrilling to them.

Speaking of food, that’s another highlight for the kids. I don’t even try to serve them “boring” casseroles while we’re in the great outdoors. Instead, it’s all about hot dogs slathered in mustard, a variety of chips, and, of course, s’mores.

Camping offers a perfect chance to disconnect from the daily grind. Even the best moms out there know that kids often spend a good part of their day glued to screens. But when we’re nestled among trees and dirt, they can’t engage in those activities—and they don’t want to! There’s too much to explore and discover.

Their sole duty while on vacation is to have fun and embrace being kids—whether that’s skipping stones, hunting for unique bugs, splashing in the lake, playing Frisbee, or reading by flashlight. It’s pure enjoyment, filled with experiences they can’t have at home, and isn’t that what vacations are all about? Escaping the monotony of everyday life to engage in something extraordinary?

Despite our financial limitations, my kids never feel like they’re missing out on anything during our camping trips. They eagerly anticipate these adventures and count down the days until we set off.

One day, I hope we can afford more extravagant vacations, like trips to Disney World or the Grand Canyon, but I want to ensure we always carve out time for camping in the summer. Cozy evenings by the campfire, waking up to fresh, crisp air, and indulging in chocolate and graham crackers until we feel stuffed—these moments nourish the soul, and I hope they remain cherished memories for my children.

Summary

Camping with kids is a fun and budget-friendly way to create lasting memories. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, the joy and freedom that children experience in nature outweigh any discomforts. This unique vacation allows kids to explore, learn, and truly enjoy their time away from the routine, making it a significant part of family summer traditions.
