“It’s what you achieve despite your limitations that truly defines you.”

The inspiration for this remarkable journey began with a travel show. “I was watching a segment on the Camino de Santiago while tuning into Rick Steves Europe,” shared Eric Thompson. “As I watched, I felt an undeniable urge within me saying, ‘You have to do this.’”

However, the roots of this adventure trace back much further. Eric and his best friend, Mark Johnson, entered the world just 36 hours apart and have been inseparable ever since. Their bond remained unbroken even when, at age 16, Eric began to experience unexplained muscle weakness. Even after Eric was diagnosed with Multifocal Acquired Motor Axonopathy, a progressive disease akin to ALS, their friendship only grew stronger. As Eric lost more physical control and relied on a wheelchair, Mark stood by him steadfastly.

“His resilience and poise in facing this challenge helped me cope,” Mark reflected. “But when it started affecting his hands, it was especially tough for me to accept.”

By the time he watched that fateful episode of Rick Steves Europe, Eric was already using a wheelchair. He recognized the adventure he wanted to undertake and who he wished to accompany him. “This friendship is a treasure. We’ve shared so much already, so why not embark on one more grand adventure? My only response was: Yes, I’ll push you,” Mark declared.

Two years later, equipped with a specially designed three-wheeled wheelchair, Eric and Mark set off on the legendary trail, starting in France and navigating through stunning mountain ranges, rivers, and the vast Spanish desert. Along the way, they encountered fellow hikers from 27 countries who generously offered their support, assisting with navigating hills, trudging through mud, and tackling rugged paths.

“Experiencing such kindness and support from others truly restored my faith in humanity,” Eric said. “It was an incredible experience.”

After 34 days, they completed the 500-mile trek. Eric and Mark are now sharing their journey through a documentary titled “I’ll Push You,” aiming to spread the message of love and unity they encountered throughout their travels.

“The people who helped us climb those mountains taught me a profound lesson about how we should live our lives,” Mark emphasized. “The greatest gift we can offer anyone we meet, regardless of their circumstances, is love.”

Eric added, “You are not limited by your circumstances. What truly defines you is how you respond to those challenges.”
