I entered the fitness scene rather late in life. Sure, I dabbled in soccer as a child, but let’s be honest: my time on the field consisted more of running aimlessly alongside other kids in matching T-shirts than actual athletic prowess. My fleeting dream of Olympic glory in track and field came to a halt in high school when I realized the hard work required to even stand on the podium. And as for dance? My sole ballet experience was a single fuzzy semester when I was just 4 years old.

So, it’s safe to say that I’m not the most graceful mom at the PTA meetings. However, as I’ve developed a fondness for physical activity and enjoy gathering with friends for outdoor runs or weekly fitness classes, I’ve become more adventurous in my quest to stay fit.

I’ve tried it all: Mommy and Me Yoga, Zumba, spin classes, and strength training. I’ve raced in road events, participated in triathlons, and completed six marathons. While I wasn’t the most athletic child, I can confidently say I’m in decent shape—my workout regime helps balance my love for wine. Let’s be real; I’m not giving that up!

So, when my friend suggested I join her for a barre class, I thought it would be a walk in the park. After all, I’ve survived swimming in murky lake waters with elite athletes and pushed through mile 20 of a marathon, known as “The Wall.” How hard could some ballet-inspired movements be with an ensemble of fellow mom dancers?

Oh, how wrong I was. The barre was set high, indeed.

What is a Barre Class?

For those unfamiliar, barre classes are the latest trend in fitness, designed around a ballet barre. The moves focus on targeting deep muscles, sculpting a lean physique, and enhancing strength and flexibility. Picture a blend of Pilates, ballet, and the challenge of balancing a book on your head—all under the watchful eyes of mirrors, with a peppy instructor guiding you through every “Pulse, pulse, hold!” while sporting perfect hair.

Let me tell you, these classes are no joke.

On my first day, my friend advised me to arrive early to get acquainted with the equipment. Naturally, I made snarky remarks about my ability to hold onto a barre. But upon entering the beautifully designed studio with its shiny wooden floors, I quickly realized I might be in over my head.

After purchasing the obligatory “grippy” socks—presumably to prevent clumsy participants like myself from flailing about—I was introduced to the various props: tiny red exercise balls, yoga mats, and circular tubes that would be strapped around my legs during class.

Despite my doubts about the resistance bands squeezing my thighs, I decided to embrace the challenge. My friend was there for moral support, and she promised a trip to Starbucks afterward. So, I took my place at the barre and braced myself.

In retrospect, I wish I had pursued dance lessons beyond the church gym where an elderly instructor taught me to plié in preschool. While the other participants struck elegant poses to a pulsating Beyoncé remix, I stumbled through the class, muttering expletives under my breath. My instructor’s encouragement felt more like a consolation prize as I fumbled through the routine, while other moms with their stylish shirts like “Barre Goals” giggled quietly at my struggles.

To be candid, I was terrible at barre class. I was the only one swearing my way through the session, and by the end, my “messy bun” resembled a disaster zone. Yet somehow, amidst the chaos, I began to grasp the routines—mostly.

By the class’s conclusion, I felt oddly relaxed, energized, and reassured that my “mom abs” would benefit from all that holding and tucking. To my surprise, I actually enjoyed my first barre class. As soon as I managed to peel myself off the mat, I signed up for a class package, greeted with cheers from the cheerful instructors. And when my instructor complimented my humorous outlook on the class, I knew I’d return for more—F-bombs and all.

Yes, I’m still mastering the moves, and I sometimes fumble when I should be holding still. However, each barre class pushes me out of my comfort zone, and I find it genuinely fun. I’m learning something new and making friends along the way. Strength comes in many forms, and these fellow moms in their glittery grippy socks really know how to work it.

While I’ve improved to the point where I don’t need to curse during class, I’ll admit: I still feel a bit nervous as I strap those red tubes around my thighs. And yes, I secretly want a shirt with a witty barre slogan. No judgment, please!
