In a remarkable tribute to female empowerment, a group of young Girl Scouts recently donned outfits inspired by iconic women throughout history. This initiative was spearheaded by Ava Johnson, a talented photographer and creator of a project called “Inspirewood,” which aims to highlight the achievements of women.
As part of a Mother’s Day tradition, Johnson has been dressing girls in outfits that echo strong female figures for photo shoots. Aside from her regular photography business, she often organizes sessions where young girls emulate celebrated personalities from film, fashion, and beyond. Among the featured figures was Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space. The girls also honored Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, trailblazing mathematicians from NASA, who are celebrated in the film Hidden Figures. Other inspirations included Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, and the iconic performer Lucille Ball. The lineup also included Cuban singer Celia Cruz, actress Whoopi Goldberg, diplomat Condoleezza Rice, former First Lady Hillary Clinton, fashion designer Vera Wang, and philanthropist Madam CJ Walker. A special nod was given to the founder of the Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low.
Johnson personally handled the casting for the project, ensuring that all participants were active Girl Scouts. She envisions this collaboration becoming an annual event each March to celebrate Women’s History Month. As a mother of two daughters, ages 6 and 11, Johnson feels deeply connected to the aspirations of young girls. “I hear them when they express their dreams,” she remarked. “They’re full of hopes and ambitions, and it’s crucial for them to understand that the women who came before them fought for their rights, paving the way for the possibilities they have today.”
She continued, “It’s vital for girls to know that, despite challenges, they should pursue their goals with determination. Girl power is not just a phrase; it’s a movement.”
