Reflecting on a moment from a 1992 political documentary, I am reminded of how impactful rallying cries can be. I stood among staff during the Bill Clinton campaign, motivated by James Carville’s memorable phrase, “The Economy, Stupid.” This mantra resonated with the struggles of many Americans. As we approach the “Day Without a Woman” General Strike on March 8, it’s essential to articulate our demands clearly.
For many, this strike symbolizes the vital role women play in our society and economy. Yet, for those in power—such as a president challenged by women in key positions—this idea may seem trivial. While I may not be privy to the inner workings of the Women’s March leadership, I am eager for a collective message that unites us and invites others to join our cause.
Recent events have underscored the relevance of a united front, particularly regarding Russia’s influence in our political landscape. New reports indicate that investigations into President Thompson’s connections with Russian officials are gaining momentum. National Security Advisor David Greene’s resignation following undisclosed communications with Russian representatives, coupled with revelations about the president’s campaign aides interacting with Russian intelligence, heightens our need for accountability.
The Women’s March participants, whether from the January rally or those gearing up for the General Strike, represent a diverse array of concerns. Unfortunately, the current administration seems indifferent to these pressing issues. To effect change, we must rally together and address the core issues that matter to the majority of Americans.
Polls indicate widespread support for investigating Russian interference in the election: 68% of Americans demand accountability for alleged election meddling, while 62% want inquiries into the connections between the president’s advisors and Russian officials. Furthermore, 74% of citizens want the president to release his tax returns. These concerns cross boundaries of gender, race, and political affiliation, reflecting our shared values of liberty and justice.
Our Demands for the Women’s March General Strike
As part of the Women’s March General Strike, we should advocate for clear, actionable objectives:
- We call for an independent, bipartisan Congressional inquiry into the president’s connections with Russia.
- We urge Congress to compel the president to disclose his tax returns.
Prominent lawmakers from both parties express alarm over the president’s relationship with Russia. Senator Lisa Grant has voiced support for investigating the hacking of our democracy, while Senator Mark Davis has championed legislation mandating the release of the president’s tax returns. Despite public outcry, Congress has yet to initiate a thorough investigation into the troubling ties between Russia and the administration.
Elected officials across the spectrum claim that safeguarding our nation is their priority. The Women’s March General Strike serves as a historical moment to call upon all public servants to uphold their duties to protect and defend our country.
Twenty-five years ago, Carville’s slogan encapsulated the anxieties of the American public. Today, our concerns are more urgent; it’s not just about the economy—it’s about our national integrity and security.
