“It takes guts to be a woman.” I stumbled upon this quote and it struck a chord with me.
Just a few weeks ago, I underwent a full hysterectomy, marking a significant turning point in my life at 40. I’m ready to dive into this experience because it’s loaded with emotion, and I believe it can be empowering.
The Strength of Women
Let’s start by acknowledging the obvious: Women are incredibly strong. We carry the weight of countless burdens throughout our lives—menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth, hormonal swings, painful conditions, and eventually menopause. I’ve exchanged super-absorbent products for hot flashes, osteoporosis, and even more mood fluctuations.
From an early age, society has conditioned us to consider menstruation a taboo topic. It’s perceived as awkward and gross. I spent years hiding my tampons under my grocery purchases, and I know many of you can relate. If a woman is irritable, people often assume it’s just her hormones acting up. The truth is, being a woman can be a real challenge, and it’s a reality we all share.
Dismantling the Stigma
We need to dismantle the stigma surrounding our reproductive health. While it can be a miracle to bring life into the world, it doesn’t come without its challenges. Many women, including myself, suffer from debilitating conditions—fibroids, chronic cysts, severe anemia, and relentless pain. These struggles led me to seek a hysterectomy; I needed to reclaim my physical and mental well-being.
I know I’m not alone in this. Every year, countless women undergo hysterectomies for various severe issues. The toll on our bodies is immense, and all too often, it goes unrecognized.
Solidarity Among Women
Solidarity is essential, sisters. We face daunting tasks daily—managing households, raising children, and juggling careers. It’s a lot to bear, and yet we rise to the occasion as true warriors.
The Importance of Self-Care
In reflecting on my journey, self-care emerges as a critical theme. I realized that while my physical challenges felt beyond my control, the idea of a major surgery excited me because it would finally allow me to rest. Isn’t that ironic? I was looking forward to a life-altering procedure just to carve out some time for self-care.
For many women I know, self-care seems like a distant fantasy. We take on too much, often out of necessity, but also because we struggle to say no. This is why we often joke about living on coffee and wine; our lives can feel overwhelmingly chaotic. This isn’t a sign of weakness or selfishness—being a woman is exhausting and, at times, relentless.
A Call to Action
So here’s my call to action: Ladies, prioritize yourself! Set aside some time, however small. Hire a babysitter, take advantage of aftercare services, or simply indulge in that extra drink with friends. Don’t hesitate to call in sick when those cramps hit hard. Revisit old hobbies, or even embark on that solo trip you’ve been dreaming of. Schedule time for yourself and stop making excuses. You deserve it, your children deserve it, and your relationships will thrive because of it.
Don’t wait for a major life change to find rest. Live fully and avoid burnout.
Keep going, warriors, and know that you’re not alone in the fight of womanhood. It truly takes a magnificent amount of courage.
