We’re the multi-level marketing (MLM) ladies that everyone seems to love to dislike.
I completely understand the disdain many feel towards those of us who engage in MLM-based businesses. The stereotypes are prevalent for a reason, and they can be incredibly frustrating. We might add you to groups without asking for your consent first, or send friend requests to your mom’s neighbor’s best friend just to grow our network. Our social media feeds can feel like an endless barrage of stock photos and memes attempting to entice you into purchasing products you may not need.
I get it. We can definitely be a nuisance—very much so.
However, many of us are involved in MLMs for various reasons, and none of them involve driving you to unfriend us or creating a voodoo doll in our likeness.
Some of us genuinely believe that MLMs offer a pathway to a life we aspire to lead. While it may appear to you as if we’re merely trying to sell you unnecessary items, we see the potential for a brighter future. The odds of striking it rich? Probably not in our favor. But in our view, every little contribution counts.
Many of us participate in MLMs simply because we crave something that belongs to us. We dedicate our days and nights to our children, partners, and households, often losing sight of our individual identities. These business opportunities are a reminder that we are more than just mothers, daughters, or wives. They represent a part of us that seeks fulfillment beyond changing diapers and distributing snacks.
Some of us aim to demonstrate to our children that there are multiple avenues to earning a living. We’re showing them that they don’t have to settle for a 9-to-5 job they dislike for 40 years before retiring. Instead, they can work from home, travel while working, or even become entrepreneurs. The possibilities are endless. The essence of our journey lies not in what we do but in teaching our kids that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to generating income.
I hope that those in your social circles who engage in MLM are considerate of your preferences. I trust they will respect your “no” and let it go without any hard feelings. I hope they seek your permission before adding you to the same group repeatedly. And I hope that even if their posts resemble infomercials, you can appreciate the passion behind their efforts and recognize that they are pursuing something meaningful to them, just as you are.
