Similarly, my son was born with that same stunning complexion and tight, curly black hair, which has led to adults questioning why he differs in appearance from his fair-skinned sisters, despite their shared features. These experiences underline the urgent need for us to transcend color barriers, recognizing our shared humanity. I refuse to let my children grow up in a society that restricts them to simplistic labels for someone else’s comfort.
I have two incredible daughters destined to ignite change, and they will not seek approval to shine. I’m a blue-haired, 43-year-old wife to a lifelong Republican who is still unsure about this election. He values our bond more than partisan politics and is slowly coming around to my perspective.
Raised by young parents who struggled to make ends meet, my childhood was marked by reliance on food stamps and welfare. We lived in a modest home above a women’s shelter, where access to basic facilities was a challenge. Now, I am privileged to be among the top 1%, but I remember that one’s circumstances do not reflect their worth or abilities. Everyone deserves a chance.
Though most of our friends support Trump, primarily for financial reasons, I hold on to hope that deep down, they might resonate with another vision. I choose love and optimism in the face of hate and division. I believe she can succeed (though I admit, I fear that sharing this thought may somehow jinx her).
