15 Astonishing Things My Kids Can’t Believe I Experienced as a Child

As long as there have been parents, there have been stories of tough childhoods. You can almost imagine prehistoric parents telling their kids, “In my day, we didn’t have tools! We had to hunt for food with our bare hands.” Our own parents regaled us with tales of walking to school through snow, barefoot, uphill both ways. It’s a rite of passage for parents to remind their children how fortunate they are to have all the modern conveniences at their fingertips.

Even though I’m only in my mid-30s—hardly ancient, unless you ask my kids—life has changed significantly since my childhood. The world today is vastly different from the ’80s and ’90s, and some of the experiences that were typical for me seem utterly outdated to my children.

For instance, back in elementary school, students could actually receive a spanking from the principal for misbehavior—a notion that seems absurd today. The wooden paddle hanging on the wall was enough to instill fear in us all. This is just one of many stories I share that leaves my kids both astonished and skeptical. Here are some more old-fashioned challenges we faced:

  1. Researching with Real Books
Before the internet, we had to venture to the library for school projects. Armed only with the Dewey Decimal System, we would hunt for books, sift through pages, and manually document our sources. No Google to help us out!
  2. Handwriting Everything
Reports didn’t magically appear; we wrote them by hand until our fingers ached, sometimes even lucky enough to use a typewriter, which meant dealing with pesky paper edges.
  3. Bathroom Breaks without Smartphones
Today, bathroom breaks might last forever as everyone scrolls through their phones. Back then, if you didn’t take a book, you were stuck reading shampoo labels or, heaven forbid, just using the restroom quickly.
  4. Rewinding Movies
In the days before streaming, we had to rewind rented videos manually. Nothing was more disappointing than finding a movie starting at the end credits.
  5. Using a Rotary Phone
Kids today might be horrified to learn that we used rotary phones. Dialing took ages—especially if you made a mistake and had to start over.
  6. Busy Signals
After all that dialing, there was nothing worse than the dreaded busy signal. If you wanted to reach a friend, you might need to bike over if their sibling was hogging the line.
  7. Mystery Phone Calls
When the phone rang, there was no caller ID. It could be anyone from Grandma to the police, and we had to answer without knowing who was on the other end.
  8. Manual Car Windows
Today’s cars have automatic windows, but we cranked ours down manually. Those arm workouts were real!
  9. Waiting for Film to Develop
Photography wasn’t instant. We had to wait for film to be developed, which could take a week. Polaroids were expensive and often came out with eyes closed!
  10. Old-School Checkout Lines
In the past, checkouts took forever. Cashiers manually rang up items, and parents had to either write checks or count out cash.
  11. Saturday Morning Cartoons
Kids today have instant access to cartoons, but we eagerly awaited Saturday mornings to watch our favorites. Missed them? Tough luck!
  12. Changing Channels Manually
Remote controls weren’t a staple in every household. Often, we had to get up to change the channel—a chore we didn’t appreciate at the time.
  13. Limited Snack Flavors
Our snack options were simple. Cheerios were just Cheerios, and Gatorade only came in lemon-lime or orange.
  14. Road Trips without Gadgets
Long car rides meant no tablets or DVD players. We had to entertain ourselves with games like I Spy—what a concept!
  15. Dial-Up Internet
When we finally got the internet, it involved a lengthy dial-up process, complete with screeching sounds, and if someone picked up the phone, we were booted off!

While I secretly relish that my kids enjoy modern conveniences, sharing how challenging things were is part of being a parent. We might not have had to walk uphill in the snow, but we certainly carried around boomboxes and managed without online shopping!
