Miracle Messages is making strides in reconnecting some of the over 600,000 individuals experiencing homelessness in the United States with their families. The journey to becoming homeless can be overwhelming, and losing touch with loved ones only amplifies that isolation. A dedicated team at Miracle Messages is working to alleviate the loneliness often associated with homelessness by helping individuals rediscover connections with their relatives.
On a single night in January 2013, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reported that 610,042 people were experiencing homelessness. This figure serves as a stark reminder of the vast population affected, although it’s not updated annually, making it easy to forget the humanity behind the numbers.
“Mom, I miss you and love you; I need to see you,” said John Smith during a video message he recorded. It had been a decade since he’d last spoken to his mother. Similarly, Jason Hargrove expressed his longing for his children, whom he hadn’t seen in 19 years, stating, “I can never find them.” These individuals are among many seeking to reconnect with their families through the efforts of Miracle Messages.
Kevin Johnson was inspired to create Miracle Messages after witnessing the struggles of his uncle, who battled schizophrenia and spent 30 years living intermittently on the streets before his death. “People facing difficulties are just like anyone else,” he reflected. “Some deal with mental health issues, while others face tough breaks—divorce, financial hardships, or unexpected health expenses.” This drive to help those without homes led to the founding of Miracle Messages.
Volunteers collaborate with homeless individuals they encounter in shelters, meal programs, or on the streets to help record messages for lost loved ones. Imagine not having spoken to a parent or sibling for an extended time, with no means to reach them even after gaining access to a phone or the internet. With a video message recorded, volunteers then utilize social media to amplify the story, increasing the likelihood of reconnecting with family.
Once a family member is located, the team assists in creating a response video. Miracle Messages aims to facilitate communication, starting with a phone call and, ideally, culminating in a face-to-face reunion. “Many on the streets grapple with mental health, addiction, or severe challenges,” Johnson noted. “They have families who deeply care for them, just like all of us.” To date, the organization has delivered 30 messages and hosted 15 successful reunions, with 40% of those helped no longer living on the streets.
