My daughter, who is just 5 years old, would love to express her gratitude to you personally, but she’s still mastering her letters. You are likely just starting to comprehend the magnitude of your fame, but I want to share what you mean to my little girl.
My daughter, Lily, was born prematurely at just 23 weeks, weighing a little over a pound. She spent an incredible 196 days in the neonatal intensive care unit, and her survival was anything but certain. To me, she was the smallest person I had ever seen, yet incredibly strong. Despite being unable to see due to her eyelids being fused, she fought for a life she couldn’t yet imagine. In that struggle, she revealed her true spirit.
Lily began gymnastics at the tender age of 2, inspired by her boundless energy. She possesses remarkable strength for her size, combined with the clumsiness of a preschooler. She walks on her hands, leaps off any surface she can find, and embraces life with laughter and daring. “Watch me,” she says, “I might surprise you!”
At her age, being small has its challenges. “When will I be big?” she often wonders, as the doctors predict she may never grow taller than 5 feet. I’ve witnessed other kids call her a baby or tell her she’s too little to join in their games. Though she tries to be brave, there are nights when she cries, wishing she were bigger.
Then we discovered you on YouTube, and everything changed. “Is Simone Biles little too?” Lily asked, and when I affirmed it, she responded, “Well, she’s better than me at gymnastics, but that’s okay.”
Now, every night, we watch videos of you, the “Best Girl in The World.” We discuss the importance of hard work, confidence, and resilience. When you executed your floor routine flawlessly and secured the gold medal, Lily couldn’t contain her excitement, jumping off the couch and cheering.
You have empowered her to combat the judgments of her peers, helping her recognize her own potential and strength. As we watched you on screen, she exclaimed, “She’s looking at me! Does she see me?” I couldn’t bear to tell her it was just television.
Lily even created a drawing for you, believing I could simply hand it to you through the screen. Here it is, full of love and appreciation.
With all our gratitude,
LILY SMITH, AGE 5
