To the Designers of Women’s Swimwear,
As a woman who regularly dons swimsuits marketed towards females, I can’t help but notice a glaring oversight in your designs: the reality of female anatomy. Specifically, I’m referring to my vagina and the accompanying pubic hair. This hair is unlike any other; it possesses a certain exuberance and refuses to conform. Let’s be real—pubic hair is a force of nature.
Surely, you must be aware of pubic hair unless you’re a young child blissfully unaware of the changes that come with puberty. However, when I look at most swimsuits featuring a high-cut design, it seems like you’ve presented women with an untenable choice: hide the pubes or let them be seen, for all the world to gawk at.
I’ve tried both options, and neither feels right. What I truly desire are better alternatives. And no, please don’t suggest a swim skirt—such an idea is beneath my dignity. I was once a competitive swimmer, capable of slicing through water with the grace of a dolphin. I need a swimsuit that allows for movement without any added frills getting in the way.
Consider my self-respect! Even if my two children decided to arrive at an inconvenient size, leading to a few body changes I won’t delve into, I still value my dignity. I love swimming—the sensation of water flowing past me is both refreshing and liberating. The last thing I need is a swim skirt interfering with my strokes.
Let’s not pretend that calling it a “sarong” makes it any better. It doesn’t. As someone who has reached a certain age, akin to my pubic hair in its honesty, I’m done pretending to be hairless. Shaving and waxing are not viable options for me—not just due to the pain involved, but also the moral question of spending money on such treatments (okay, fine, it’s mostly the pain).
When I finally decide to wear one of your swimsuits and my pubes make an appearance, I feel the weight of everyone’s gaze—whether it’s my well-meaning father-in-law or a fellow mom. The reactions range from shock to curiosity, and I can’t help but wonder what’s going through their minds. It’s not about shame—well, maybe a bit. It’s more about feeling exposed and scrutinized.
In short, I’m asking for swimsuits that provide adequate coverage without sacrificing style. A little more fabric in the V-zone would allow me to swim without the anxiety of razor burn or public scrutiny. Men have always had this luxury, so why can’t women?
If you’re indifferent to our preferences, consider the financial implications—there’s a vast market of adult women who aren’t ready to embrace swim skirts. Trust me; it’s a substantial audience.
Sincerely,
A Swimmer in Search of Coverage
