7 Personalities You Encounter in Spin Class

In my journey into the fitness world, I didn’t start until after having two kids and two C-sections, right around the time I hit thirty. It became clear that my body had changed significantly from my teens and twenties; the thighs, in particular, were a stark reminder that I needed to take action. If I wanted to avoid wearing oversized clothing during preschool drop-offs, I had to get moving.

I swapped ice cream for running, and while my first attempts were far from graceful, they led to six marathons, fourteen half-marathons, and six triathlons. Now, I can confidently say I could outrun a clown if need be.

Though I enjoy running, cycling has never been my forte. The lack of safe roads, a few nasty spills, and a couple of close calls with cars made it less appealing. Plus, those clipless shoes? Pure torture. Just ask my friend who witnessed me stuck in the pedals, frantically pedaling in an intersection as I screamed in frustration. So, I turned to spin classes.

Spin class is a unique experience where participants hop on stationary bikes, pedaling through imaginary terrains while rocking out to high-energy music. Instructors yell commands like “Hill climb!” or “Attack!” as you sweat profusely, all while remaining firmly in place. One of the best parts? You can’t fall off the bike, and there’s no need for a helmet.

Over time, I’ve noticed that spin classes attract distinct personalities. While Mitch Albom introduced us to the Five People You Meet in Heaven, I present to you the Seven Personalities You Meet in Spin Class:

1. The Newbie

You can easily spot this individual. She’s often confused, struggling to adjust her bike, and looking around for guidance. For the first few classes, she’s endearing—after that, she’s fair game for the Instructor Wannabe.

2. The Instructor Wannabe

This person takes spin class very seriously. Armed with extensive knowledge of routines and music playlists from months ago, she’s eager to share advice and point out what you’re doing wrong. Often, she’s best friends with The Lifer.

3. The Lifer

Every spin class has one dedicated biker who claims her territory. The Lifer owns a specific bike and will fiercely protect it. She knows every detail about her bike and makes a grand entrance, causing others to part ways like the Red Sea. The Newbie tends to shrink in her presence.

4. The Class Clowns

These individuals can’t seem to keep a straight face. Usually found in the back, they joke, laugh, and chat about dinner plans, making a mockery of the serious atmosphere. Though The Lance Armstrong or Instructor Wannabe may scorn them for not pushing hard enough, everyone secretly wishes they could join in on the fun.

5. The New Year’s Resolutionist

Popping up every January, this person shows up for a couple of classes before disappearing until the next year.

6. The Lance Armstrong Wannabe

Serious about spin, he’s decked out in expensive gear and boasts about his biking experiences. His warm-up is your max effort, and he’s got stories about his road bikes that could last all day. His rival? The Octogenarian.

7. The Octogenarian

This spry 80-year-old might look frail, but she’s a powerhouse on the bike, maintaining a fast pace that could put many younger participants to shame.

As for me, I embrace my role as the Class Clown, finding humor in the grind of spinning while chasing after The Lance Armstrong Wannabe.
