The Fork Incident: A Teenager’s Rage

At a gathering of insightful women (a book club filled with exceptionally smart individuals…and me), I found myself breaking my own rule of maintaining composure when someone innocently inquired about my lovely teenage daughter. With an alarming eagerness, I exclaimed how much I felt like I could stab her with a fork.

“She’s such a handful! Always so selfish and moody! She gives me the stink eye for everything! Eye-rolling, foot-stomping, door-slamming—seriously, we had to take the door off its hinges! I could really stab her! That little brat, I could stab her with a fork. I can’t take it anymore!”

Most of the ladies weren’t shocked by my outburst, as I hadn’t exactly been the epitome of grace in previous meetings.

One friend abruptly set her wine glass down, cleared her throat, crossed her arms, and shot me a disapproving glare. “Jenna, it really makes me uncomfortable to hear you talk so violently about your daughter. I know her personally, and she is, quite frankly, a gem. I find it disturbing how you express yourself. She’s a young girl and deserves your respect; you owe her at least that much.”

Anger and embarrassment surged through me, leaving me momentarily speechless. Before I could muster a response or (gasp) an apology for my outburst, another voice chimed in.

“With all due respect, Linda, you need to pipe down.”

The room fell silent. This was not the usual foul-mouthed mom; it was a calm, kind-hearted mother whom I deeply respected.

“You have two sons. SONS. You have no idea what it’s like to raise a teenage daughter in your home—and Jenna has three! So, with all due respect: just be quiet. You have no understanding of the monsters these girls can turn into without any warning. No clue at all.”

My unexpected defender, a mother of a 15-year-old girl, then turned to me and said, “I totally get it: I say fork her.”

This experience reminded me that parenting can be a wild ride, especially when raising teenage daughters.
