My “Forget It” List Has Taken Over My Bucket List

I have a bucket list, and I’m sure you do too, but right now my “Forget It” list takes the front seat. Sure, one day I’d love to wander through Italy indulging in carbs and wine, along with checking off other bucket list items, but for now, those plans are on hold. At this moment, my focus is on the forget it list because, quite frankly, my mind just can’t juggle both. I’ve discovered that letting go and saying “forget it” is incredibly liberating. If it doesn’t excite me, I simply say “forget it.” If I can’t avoid it, then forget it, I’ll just embrace it. I take pride in my growing list— the older I get, the longer it becomes, and the happier I feel. Life’s annoyances become a lot more bearable when paired with “forget it.” Here are ten of my top forget its:

  1. The Tupperware Cabinet
Since my first child learned to crawl and turn my Tupperware cabinet into a playground, this space has become a notorious time sink. It’s legendary for being the first babysitter, but I’ve realized that having kids and a perfectly organized Tupperware cabinet just doesn’t coexist well. I’ve stopped pulling my hair out over matching lids and containers. Instead, I wrap leftovers in plastic wrap and pour myself a glass of wine—one that proudly says “forget it” on it.
  2. Matching Socks
Honestly, life is too short for the chaos of matching socks. My kids often sport mismatched pairs, or sometimes just one sock. I’ve decided it’s simpler to toss them all in a drawer and declare, “Forget it, I did my best, and nobody really minds.”
  3. Cleaning the Junk Drawer
Nope, not happening. It’s far more entertaining to dump out the contents of that drawer into the trash and make space for more junk. Just like that, I save myself hours of work and a headache—forget it!
  4. Using the Drive-Thru
I often need a caffeine fix. I’ve tried to quit for the umpteenth time this month, but forget it; I know my family benefits from a caffeinated mom. Plus, grabbing dinner from the drive-thru gets everyone excited, especially when the kids go into a blissful french fry coma on the way home.
  5. Lying to My Kids
“Mom, was that the Easter bunny hopping around last night?” I could have a deep conversation about reality versus fiction, but mixing that with the birds and the bees feels off. So, I just say “forget it” and let them believe what they want, handing them extra candy for good measure.
  6. Swimsuit Shopping
If I bend over in this bikini, let’s just say, some things will spill out. But you know what? As long as I look good standing still, I’ll take it. That’s the essence of saying “forget it!”
  7. Letting Kids Dress Themselves
My daughter loves her fleece pajamas in the summer, and my son insists on wearing knee socks with shorts during winter. After explaining the importance of dressing appropriately, I count to three for them to change. By the time I reach two, I think “forget it, be comfortable however you choose.”
  8. Allowing Sugar Consumption
While they’re playing outside, I figure they’ll burn off those popsicles. I embrace my role as a fun mom, so why not let them have a third? But when the sugar kicks in and they start bouncing off the walls, I have another “forget it” moment and hand them their iPads for some peace.
  9. Treating Myself
Whether it’s a pretty dress, tasty treat, or cute shoes, every mom deserves a little indulgence to keep our spirits high. After five years of diaper duty, I firmly say “Forget it, I deserve this!”
  10. Caring About Others’ Opinions
This might lean more toward “forget you” or “forget off,” but honestly, I don’t care. Plenty of people appreciate my carefree attitude, and as I embrace saying “forget it,” it seems to spread joy to others too.

Eventually, I’ll revisit my bucket list, but that’s not happening anytime soon, and I’m perfectly content with that. For now, I’m busy watching my kids enjoy their popsicles, dress in their unique styles, and toss mismatched socks into a drawer, all while I savor that third glass of wine because—forget it!
