Dear Mom: I Stand By You, Regardless of Your Feeding Choices

Hey there, wonderful mama! When it comes to deciding how long you breastfeed your little one, the choice is entirely yours. Whether you choose to breastfeed at all is also up to you. It’s as simple as that.

I’m exhausted by the judgment, guilt, and anxiety surrounding breastfeeding decisions among mothers. Can we agree to put an end to this? Let’s support each other’s choices when it comes to our bodies and our babies, without interference.

I see the criticisms from both sides. Some moms can’t fathom anything other than breast milk touching their baby’s lips, while others criticize mothers who breastfeed, often without knowing their full stories. I’ve witnessed the discomfort from bystanders when a mother discreetly nurses her child, or when someone questions why a mom is still breastfeeding her toddler.

As someone who has nursed both of my children and is also a certified lactation consultant, I understand the importance of breast milk. It can indeed save lives, and every mother should have the opportunity to breastfeed if she wishes. However, I also believe we need to take a step back and support one another, no matter our feeding choices. In a country like ours, where most have access to healthcare, babies generally thrive, regardless of whether they’re breastfed.

While breast milk has undeniable health benefits, what truly matters is the overall well-being of your child. Are you providing nutritious meals, encouraging some outdoor play, and showering your child with love? If so, you’re doing an amazing job, regardless of how you choose to feed them.

It’s time to eliminate the stigma surrounding formula feeding. Many mothers I’ve worked with who didn’t breastfeed already feel a sense of loss. The last thing they need is additional judgment. You never know the full story behind a mother’s decision, so it’s best not to make assumptions.

If a mother has decided against breastfeeding, that’s her business. Conversely, if a mother is proud of her breastfeeding journey, let her celebrate that success. Breastfeeding can be incredibly challenging, and mothers often face scrutiny from various sources.

Also, let’s dispel a common misconception: breastfeeding is not sexual. While breasts can be sexual in certain contexts, when they’re being used to nourish a baby, they are not. Women have the right to determine how they use their bodies.

For New Moms

If you want to breastfeed, fantastic! If you don’t, that’s perfectly acceptable too. If you encounter challenges, do seek professional help. Financial constraints shouldn’t deter you, as many lactation consultants offer flexible pricing, and some insurance plans cover these services. There are also many volunteer supporters ready to assist you.

And remember, don’t let outside opinions dictate your choices regarding your body and your baby. It’s your journey, and you have the final say. Your body, your baby, your choice.
