As a mother in my 30s, I often find myself completely out of the loop when it comes to the latest slang trends. Admittedly, there have been moments where I’ve resorted to Google to decipher phrases like “bye, Felicia,” wondering just who this Felicia was and why everyone was bidding her farewell. While I know that checking Urban Dictionary is not exactly chic, I do feel I have some expertise in the realm of parenting lingo. I can fluently communicate in toddler-ese and easily distinguish between a baby exclaiming “Ma! Ma!” and one inquiring “Ma? Ma?” Given all that mothers contribute to society, I believe we should have a say in defining contemporary slang.
1. On Fleek
Real version: Used to describe something that’s perfectly executed, like “This outfit is on fleek.”
Mom version: Refers to that amazing deal you snagged at the flea market, e.g., “I found this outfit on fleek for just $10!” Both the dress and the pinwheel are on fleek!
2. Netflix and Chill
Real version: A euphemism for casual sex (sometimes accompanied by actual Netflix).
Mom version: A night in binge-watching “House of Cards” and drifting off by 8:30 p.m. Settling in for some quality time with Frank Underwood.
3. Bae
Real version: A term of endearment meaning “before anyone else.”
Mom version: A cute shorthand for bagel, e.g., “I’m craving a bae with a schmear.”
4. Squad
Real version: Your close circle of friends.
Mom version: The kids, e.g., “Sorry for the delay; it took forever to get the squad ready.”
Bonus: Squad Goals: Achieving a small victory with the kids, e.g., “The brothers aren’t fighting! #SquadGoals!”
5. Stay Woke
Real version: Being conscious of important social issues.
Mom version: Simply trying to get through the day on minimal sleep, e.g., “The baby kept me up all night. I’m just trying to stay woke.” Stay woke like a champ!
By the time this piece is published, these terms may be long out of style, but I’m eager to give the next round of slang a mom-friendly twist. Until then, goodbye Felicia! (That’s a warm farewell to anyone named Felicia. Hope your day is lovely!)

In summary, mothers have a unique perspective on slang, often adapting terms to fit their daily realities. Whether it’s redefining “on fleek” or “Netflix and chill,” moms have the creativity to transform language in ways that resonate with their experiences.
