For many women aiming for a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), timing is crucial. Arriving at the hospital too early can lead to unnecessary complications, as hospital staff may be hesitant to allow a woman in labor to stay. When Sarah Thompson was preparing for her third delivery, she had already successfully navigated a VBAC, so she had her support team ready for the anticipated arrival. However, life often has other plans.

In an unexpected turn of events, Sarah gave birth to her daughter in the family SUV parked outside of Maple Grove Regional Hospital. Fortunately, her birth photographer, Lisa Carter, was there to document the extraordinary moment.

As her contractions became more intense, coming every 15 minutes, Sarah decided to call her birth team, which included her doula, photographer, mother, and a close friend who worked as a labor and delivery nurse. She wanted her friend to assess her progress to avoid rushing to the hospital prematurely. While in labor, Sarah efficiently organized her team, demonstrating remarkable composure. She recounted her incredible journey in a message to Home Insemination Kit, showcasing her strength.

Not only did Sarah expertly gather her birth team while experiencing active labor, but she also made sure her husband, Mike, and their two sons were undisturbed. “I labored downstairs to let them sleep while I paced around,” she shared. “I even made coffee for everyone and prepared Mike’s gift for when I would wake him.”

Eventually, she decided it was time to alert her husband. “I went upstairs to let him know it was time to go and handed him his gift (a ‘Labor Coach’ shirt with his instructions). He got up and showered, while I dashed to the bathroom to vomit.” Just another day in the life of a determined mother!

After laboring in the tub, she lost her mucous plug and decided it was time to head to the hospital. With her doula, photographer, and husband by her side, they set out, but the urgency of her labor escalated quickly. “By the time we got on the highway, I was moaning and screaming because I felt the intense urge to push,” she recalled.

Upon arriving at the hospital, the situation reached its climax: “I’m pretty sure my water broke as she was coming out. My doula instructed Mike to catch her head. A nurse quickly assisted, suctioning the fluids around the baby’s face. Then, my midwife, Christine, took over, and with just a few pushes, my daughter was born. She was placed on my chest as we waited for the cord to pulsate before Mike cut it. I then got out of the car and into a wheelchair, holding my baby.”

Photographer Lisa Carter notes on her blog that Sarah was determined to have a positive VBAC experience, instead of opting for a repeat cesarean, which many providers might have suggested. “Sarah assembled a supportive birth team, including midwife Christine Hackshaw and doula Lindsey Ripley, who respected her wishes for a second VBAC,” she explains.

When the media expressed interest in Sarah’s inspiring VBAC journey, she agreed to share her story—not to criticize the choices of other mothers opting for cesareans, but to highlight the importance of respecting women’s birth decisions. “She aims to empower mothers to be informed about their choices and to connect with providers who will support their birth plans,” Lisa states.

While I personally experienced challenges with my own VBAC journey, I resonate with the positive message of Sarah’s story. Every woman deserves the right to make informed decisions about her birth, and it’s perfectly acceptable to have a vision and plan in place.
