Revenge can be delightful, especially when it serves to restore balance in the parenting dynamic. I’m specifically referring to the ongoing battle over sleep—particularly when our kids hit their teenage years. I can already envision relishing the task of dragging them out of bed each morning, sharing my dreams, my plans for the day, and even my life aspirations. Ah, the sweet satisfaction of that moment!
While our children are undeniably precious, they can also be little monsters—mischievously smearing their boogers on our favorite shirts or vomiting in our hands. Yet, we parents can tip the scales back in our favor through harmless, subtle acts of “revenge.” Here are some clever ideas:
- Create a Color Lie: Tell your kids that their eye color changes when they’re lying. Watch them squirm to maintain eye contact; it’s hilarious!
- Delegate the Dirty Work: Assign them a chore you detest and convince them they’re exceptional at it. I’ve done this, and now my daughter insists she loves cleaning the bathroom.
- Teach Them Survival Skills: Show them classic pranks like wet willies or punch-buggy. It’s all about helping them defend themselves in the world, right?
- Fabricate a Fun Myth: Spin an elaborate tale about a mysterious old man who drops by once a year to deliver gifts. He’s always watching to see if they’re being good—no guilt there!
- Swap Roles: For a few minutes, trade places. Declare, “I’ll be the child, and you be the parent,” and act out a tantrum over a shirt tag. They’ll find it amusing until it gets real!
- Awkward Conversations: When they hit 16, try to explain how and where they were conceived. Prepare for their dramatic reactions and the inevitable gagging noises.
- Drop-off Fashion Statements: When taking them to school, rock your most embarrassing outfit—like Spandex and a bathrobe. They can’t complain about your style when they’ve had their own cringe moments!
- Fruit Surprises: Hand them a grapefruit while they expect an orange. Their bewilderment will be priceless, especially if they’ve never encountered one before.
- Early Wake-Up Joy: Revel in the joy of waking them early for a family trip. Sing loudly and maybe even dance around their room. The eye rolls are worth it!
- Embrace Grandparenting: Ultimately, the best “revenge” may just be becoming a grandparent. Returning your children to them all hyped up on sweets while you bask in their joy can be immensely satisfying.
It often feels like our kids are the ones winning—let’s face it, they usually are. However, it’s comforting to know we can reclaim our power, one embarrassing moment at a time.
