Like many parents, I adore my children with a passion that’s hard to match. Still, there are moments when I wish I could gently usher them away, just for a little while. Here are five such occasions:
1. In the Dead of Night
Listen closely, little one. That rustling you hear is nature doing its thing while you should be dreaming. If you’re feeling frightened or need comfort, I understand; I’m here for those moments. However, when it’s 3 a.m., and you’re requesting snacks because dinner was left untouched, or you’re itching from a bug bite and want another bedtime story, my patience has limits. Time to go back to sleep, kiddo.
2. When They’re a Sticky Mess
If you’ve somehow managed to get yourself covered in a combination of substances such as syrup, mud, or even paint, I need a moment to regroup. No matter how adorable you are, the sight of you looking like a walking disaster makes me want to send you outside and grab the garden hose. Seriously, I might need to mentally prepare before diving into cleanup.
3. At the Crack of Dawn
Much like being roused in the middle of the night, being jolted out of sleep at dawn will earn you a disappointed look. Just because the sun has decided to shine brightly in your face doesn’t mean you should bounce into my room like a tiny alarm clock. Next time, perhaps bring a donut or a cup of coffee instead of your exuberance.
4. During Intimate Moments
Unless we are part of a whimsical community that encourages children to observe their parents’ private moments, it’s incredibly awkward when you wander into the bedroom and question what’s happening. If you’re concerned that Daddy is hurting Mommy, please back out of the room slowly and pretend this never happened. Let’s keep those kinds of moments off-limits for your sake and mine.
5. When I’m Using the Bathroom
No matter my intentions, you seem to follow me into the bathroom without fail. Your loud inquiries about whether I’m peeing or pooping feel like a form of revenge for all those potty-training sessions. Look, a bathroom break is not a communal event—it’s a moment for solitude, not a family meeting.
While it’s completely normal for parents to occasionally wish for a little alone time, the moments you crave your kids back will come sooner than you think. After all, they have an unparalleled ability to charm you—most of the time.

In summary, while parenting is filled with love and joy, there are undeniably times when you just need a breather. Embrace those moments, and remember that they’ll pass all too quickly.
