Let me be candid: I reside in a rather affluent neighborhood in Toronto, where 3,000-square-foot homes are the norm and their price tags are quite hefty. This is the sort of place that boasts an array of gourmet grocery stores and features upscale children’s boutiques where you might find a designer onesie priced at $50. It’s a neighborhood where nannies from various corners of the globe collect kids from school and whisk them off to the park.

To put it simply, we don’t quite fit in.

We stumbled upon a quaint, century-old bungalow in a part of town where similar homes are often demolished to make way for sprawling modern mansions—there seems to be a new one going up on every block. While this area is ideal for our children, I often find it challenging to connect with the other parents.

Nevertheless, I’m determined to keep up with the trends. While the chic moms around here have their signature looks, I’m here to assert that we everyday moms can curate our own style guide, too. After all, I have my own go-to outfits of sorts.

If you’re feeling daunted by the stylish women nearby or simply stuck in a fashion rut, continue reading for essential SAHM (Stay-at-Home Mom) basics to enhance your wardrobe. You may not have designer leggings in your closet, but these timeless pieces will serve you well.

Comfortable Basics

Let’s be real: who has time to do laundry every day? I mean, these items are meant to last through multiple wears! Bonus points if you can slip on a pair of shoes without needing to change first when you drop your child off at school.

Nursing tanks are a game-changer. Even if you’re not breastfeeding, these are incredibly comfortable; I still wear mine regularly, even 15 months postpartum. They’re perfect for layering under a sweatshirt, allowing you to go from pajamas to school drop-off without a wardrobe change. Trust me, invest in a few—you won’t regret it.

Black yoga pants are another genius invention. They’re the epitome of comfort and can be dressed up or down. The color conveniently conceals any mess, and unless you’ve spilled yogurt on them, they can endure quite a few wears without needing a wash.

A stylish hat can be your best friend, especially on days when you haven’t showered in a while. It can lend a sporty flair while also hiding unkempt hair—bonus if it’s free from a previous job you once had.

Don’t underestimate the power of a neutral hoodie. It’s great for covering up those days when you’re still in your pajama top at lunchtime, or when you forget to put on deodorant. Who has time for laundry anyway?

Accessorizing Your Look

Optional accessories can elevate your look. If you’re planning to ditch the hat, don’t forget these must-haves. They’re lifesavers for moms everywhere.

And for those dealing with the inevitable greys, embrace them! If you don’t have the luxury of time for regular hair dyeing, don’t stress. After all, it’s about feeling good in your skin, right?

Now, let’s be honest: I wish I could follow the washing instructions for all my clothes, but let’s face it—things go into the washer and dryer, and you wear what you can find.

That’s it for now, ladies. I know there are many more essentials to cover, but I’m out of time to brew another cup of coffee before picking up my little whirlwind from school.
