Hope: A Double-Edged Sword

In many respects, we count ourselves fortunate. Our family rarely faces medical appointments since there are no viable treatments available for our child. We are spared the endless cycle of hospital visits, invasive procedures, and the heartache of watching our little one suffer in the hope of recovery.

The time spent with our son, Leo, is precious—underscored by the awareness that it is limited. This understanding has transformed our perspective, allowing us to find happiness in moments that might have otherwise gone unnoticed. We have become more grateful for the little things, recognizing the abundance in our lives amidst the challenges we face.

Yet, I cannot shake the envy I feel towards other children battling similar circumstances. I find myself longing for the hope they possess—the possibility of treatment and recovery that is denied to us. I sincerely empathize with their struggles; I wouldn’t wish the pain of loss on anyone. Still, I would give almost anything for a chance for Leo. Since that is unattainable, I commit to making each day meaningful.
