8 Surprising Realities of Pregnancy

Pregnancy brings its own set of challenges and surprises. While indulging in the idea of eating for two can be appealing, the reality is that many aspects of pregnancy are less glamorous than expected. Here are eight misconceptions I had about pregnancy that were completely turned on their head once I began the journey of nurturing a tiny human inside me:

  1. “I’ll just be a bit sensitive to certain smells.”

I quickly discovered that my sense of smell had transformed dramatically. I could detect someone’s body odor from blocks away. Certain scents, like gasoline, hand sanitizer, and even cooking meat, could send me into a nausea spiral in seconds.

  2. “I’ll experience morning sickness.”

I had a very naive understanding of this term. What should have been labeled “morning sickness” should have been dubbed “the nausea that never ends.” It felt like I was in a constant state of queasiness all day long.

  3. “I’ll have mild mood swings.”

I thought I was prepared for mood swings, but nothing could have prepared me for the roller coaster of emotions that pregnancy brought. One minute I’d be crying over a touching advertisement for pet adoptions, and the next I’d be laughing hysterically before bursting into tears again, all within a few minutes.

  4. “I’ll be a little gassy.”

I was taken aback by the variety of sounds and odors that emerged from my body. From short, sharp toots resembling machine gun fire to lengthy rumbles akin to a tuba, I was left shocked and often embarrassed by the olfactory aftermath.

  5. “I’ll use lotion to prevent stretch marks.”

Despite slathering on every lotion and oil imaginable, stretch marks still came knocking at my door. At least I could take comfort in smelling like cocoa butter instead of the other unpleasant scents.

  6. “I’ll enjoy choosing baby names.”

While I did find joy in selecting names, I was unprepared for the torrent of unsolicited feedback from others. Everyone had a story about someone they knew with the same name, making it nearly impossible to keep my choices under wraps until the birth.

  7. “I’ll embrace my growing belly.”

Initially, I was proud of my cute six-month bump. However, as I neared the end of my pregnancy, I found myself struggling to move or even see my own body, which had turned into a less-than-cute “love forest” rather than a “love garden.”

  8. “I’ll catch up on sleep.”

Who spread this myth? Between my ever-expanding belly, constant discomfort, and the need to use the restroom every 20 minutes, restful sleep was far from reality.

Pregnancy turned out to be quite different from what I had anticipated. There was no “glow” for me—just a sheen of sweat and grease. Yet, when I finally held my baby in my arms, I realized that every uncomfortable moment was worth it.
