As I contemplate my daughter’s first birthday, I know that throwing a party for her is probably not the best decision. Yet, I feel compelled to celebrate this significant milestone. There will be cake (a delightful yet potentially risky addition), and an influx of unfamiliar faces eager to hold, cuddle, or otherwise overwhelm my little one. And, of course, there will be plenty of adult beverages—because I deserve to celebrate this occasion. Well, she does, but you get my point!
Through my extensive research, I’ve discovered that the ideal first birthday parties are intimate gatherings, preferably held in a place the child knows well and at a time that aligns with their schedule. While this sounds sensible, who wants to be sensible? First birthdays are akin to New Year’s Eve parties—filled with hope and a touch of fantasy. So, I’m opting to dismiss all the well-meaning advice in favor of throwing a grand celebration that is likely to go hilariously awry.
For those of you who share my enthusiasm for an extravagant first birthday bash, I’m thrilled to share my obsessive planning efforts. After all, isn’t it a rite of passage for parents to meticulously prepare for an event only to have it derailed by their unpredictable offspring?
Invitation to Our Little One’s Surprise 1st Birthday Party!
- Occasion: Our baby’s 1st birthday
- Theme: Surprise party!
- Time: Sometime between naps. Perhaps 1-4 PM, 3-6 PM, or even 3:30-6:30 PM to be safe? If it gets too late, we risk bedtime chaos. Can I just text you 15 minutes before we arrive?
- Location: Here’s the deal—I’d rather not host at home. Since our precious little angel graced us with her presence, our space has devolved into a state even the most optimistic real estate agent couldn’t sugarcoat. “It’s a fixer-upper at heart,” they might say. And let’s be real; I want the option to leave if things go south. A nearby restaurant or cafe—or better yet, a bar—sounds perfect.
Logistics
I’ll manage getting the birthday girl to the location, likely under the pretense of a new jogging route. Ha! She’ll be blissfully unaware! However, please refrain from yelling “Surprise!” upon our arrival, as this will frighten her and likely lead to a diaper disaster (which is coincidentally unrelated to the surprise factor).
Guest List
Everyone is welcome! Feel free to bring along partners, children, and anyone else who might add to the fun. However, we prefer to keep the adult-to-child ratio around 15-to-1. I’ve even graciously decided to extend an invitation to my partner’s ex-wife, but solely as an additional babysitter. Sometimes, I’m just too kind!
Gift Ideas
Our daughter has developed an affinity for wine—yes, it’s true! Her favorite pastime is pulling bottles off the rack (a skill she gets from me). She seems to favor sauvignon blanc and dry riesling. Who knew?
Party Activities
The little one enjoys games like Hide-and-Seek with the TV Remote and Food on the Floor Scavenger Hunt. There might also be a competitive round of Bang on the Computer Keyboard, with the first person to delete a crucial document declared the winner!
Reminder
If you happen to chat with our daughter in the next couple of weeks, please don’t mention the party—it would ruin the element of surprise. Also, if I bake a cake or procure decorations, it might arouse suspicion. It would be much better if someone else handled those details.
Final Thoughts
Keep in mind that our darling won’t remember this event. It’s really an opportunity for her father and me to pat ourselves on the back for surviving a year of parenthood. So far, our little girl shows no signs of emotional dysfunction (barring the occasional bed-wetting and mysterious crying fits). We’re winning this parenting game!
Thanks, and I hope to see you there!
