As someone who thrives on planning and organization, it feels completely unnatural to neglect evening preparations that would make the next day smoother. After a long day, my mind craves a break—I just want to switch to autopilot, relax, and let my thoughts drift away. However, as I settle into bed, a whirlwind of thoughts often invades my mind:
- What’s on the agenda for tomorrow?
- What time should I set the alarm to maximize my snooze button usage?
- Oh no, I forgot to remind Lucas about that last worksheet in his homework packet. Maybe he can squeeze it in before the bus arrives (I chuckle at the absurdity of morning homework).
- Do we need to return library books tomorrow? Are there repairs to be made?
- What should I pack for the kids’ lunches?
- It’s spirit color day at school, and I think his shirt is crumpled in the laundry basket by the dryer. I’ll just pop it in the dryer on permanent press when I wake up.
- We have that event coming up in two nights, and I still don’t have a babysitter. How necessary is it on a scale from one to ten?
- I need to bring a dish to the gathering this weekend. Do I have enough ingredients at home, or will I need to run to the grocery store?
- I stayed up too late again. I hope the youngest doesn’t wander in to sleep with us at 4 a.m. I really need my rest.
- Will that person ever respond to my email?
- How much should we contribute to the PTO? I appreciate that the school offers this option instead of fundraising.
- The living room looks like a tornado hit it.
- I hope I’m not too late to reserve that venue for Lucas’ birthday party. He’s been looking forward to it.
- Oh, no—he’s going to remember his 8th birthday as a letdown.
- The boys played so well together tonight; it was heartwarming. I’ll cherish the memory of them sprawled out on the floor with toys and empty snack bowls around them.
- Did I ever return that large soup bowl to Sarah from church? What happened to it? I hope she knows how grateful I am for her kindness when she brought us soup that day.
- The apples in the fridge are starting to spoil. Maybe I should whip up some apple crisp.
- I should find a way to brighten someone’s day tomorrow. There’s a little box in the laundry room cabinet that I could turn into a care package.
- Did I remember to cancel that Amazon subscription for dishwasher tabs? We’ve got way too many now—I did the same thing with diapers once.
- We should ceremoniously run the Diaper Genie over with the truck to celebrate our potty training triumph. Ugh, I can’t stand that thing; the foot pedal is stuck again.
- We really need to clear out that pedal car in the garage. The kids never use it. What else can I declutter?
- I hope my relatives in Kansas are doing well tonight, and I’m thinking of our sponsored child, Ravi. Does he have everything he needs? Is he sleeping in a proper bed?
- Thank you, Lord, for all our blessings and this beautifully chaotic life. Please watch over our family in Oklahoma with the storms approaching. And can you also…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
In summary, it’s a nightly ritual for many moms to reflect on the day’s events, future tasks, and worries as they prepare for sleep. Despite the chaos, there’s a deep appreciation for family and the little moments that make life special.
