Amid the daily hustle and bustle, I often find myself pondering the question: Why? It’s a fundamental aspect of our human nature to seek understanding and order amidst chaos. Our brains are designed to gather information and make sense of it, a task that can feel overwhelming. Multiple times a day, I catch myself asking “why,” yet deep down I know that the answers elude me. As articulated in the Bhagavad Gita, “You will never untangle the circumstances that brought you to this moment.” This realization often leads people to seek comfort in faith, religion, or even addiction, as we grapple with the fear of uncertainty in a chaotic world. It’s easy to fall into the trap of saying, “It was meant to be,” or “Let it be,” or perhaps even resorting to a drink to numb the confusion. I, too, have sought solace in these distractions to cope with the relentless complexities of life.

Recently, my daughter, Lily, decided to part with her last three pacifiers. It was clear she had outgrown them, and I felt no need to craft a comforting narrative about leaving behind something deemed suitable only for “babies.” But why is that perception so negative? Everyone yearns for something to provide comfort during dark times. There are moments when I wish for a pacifier as well. However, Lily wasn’t discarding her pacifiers out of embarrassment; rather, she was motivated by love. She wanted to donate them to the babies in the hospital, driven solely by the desire to help others without expectation of reward. She is a generous spirit, embodying the essence of a pacifier—she brings peace and comfort. Her selflessness brings me a sense of solace amidst the chaos.

In essence, while pacifiers may be symbols of infancy, they represent a deeper human need for comfort and connection, transcending age and circumstance.
