I Delivered a 12-Pound Baby: ‘He Was Amazing and Just a Lot More to Cherish’

My entire pregnancy was wonderfully uneventful—perhaps the most uneventful in history—and I feel incredibly fortunate to say that. However, looking back, that should have hinted to me that my delivery experience would be quite different—and it truly was.

The Labor Experience

The labor process was lengthy but pretty standard. We opted not to find out if we were having a boy or a girl, which added an extra layer of excitement. I was considered low risk, and since there were no concerns, my 20-week anatomy scan turned out to be the last ultrasound of my pregnancy. Fast forward to my 37-week appointment, where my doctor did a cervical check and noted that I was 70% effaced and 2 centimeters dilated. I thought labor would come soon, but days turned into weeks without any change. After my 41-week check-up, I was induced.

I had my hospital bag packed for over two months, fully expecting to go into labor earlier. Upon arrival at the hospital, I was quickly connected to an IV with Pitocin, kickstarting my contractions. Shortly after, my doctor came in and broke my water. It was at that moment I realized what everyone meant about labor and the intensity of contractions. I opted for an epidural and immediately felt a wave of relief—I felt as if I could run a marathon! I slept, chatted with my partner, and kept family and friends updated. I was in a great mood, feeling that something significant was happening, but without any pain to deal with.

The Arrival of My Baby Boy
