5 Changes I’d Make If I Could Relive High School

Reflecting on my high school years, there are definitely a few things I’d approach differently if given the opportunity:

  1. Embrace Physical Education: Just think about it—fifty minutes of daily exercise with a coach to guide you? Whether in a gym, on a track, or playing sports like tennis or softball, I would fully immerse myself in P.E. I’d even try out for every sport available, leaving behind any insecurities about my body. I’d tackle gym class with the enthusiasm of a marathon runner at the starting line. Bring it on!
  2. Prioritize Friendships: I would focus more on being a better friend to my female peers. Forget the distractions of chasing after boys. I’d value the unique bond shared between girlfriends, knowing these moments would become rare. Boyfriends can wait, and they can certainly wait a little longer while I enjoy the camaraderie of my girl gang.
  3. Appreciate My Teachers: In my youth, I viewed teachers as adversaries. Now, I recognize the dedication they bring to their work, often for little pay and with minimal respect, yet they change lives daily. I would sit at the front, eager to soak up every lesson, whether it be clarinet in band, acting, or auto mechanics. And can you imagine discussing literature with English teachers? Pure bliss! However, I’d still politely decline math class—some things never change.
  4. Find My Passion: I learned early on that math and science weren’t my forte, but I was too shy to admit it. I would go back and confidently tell my geometry teacher that the odds of needing to calculate angles were slim. Instead, I’d rather chat about the Brontë sisters with the librarian. It’s essential to embrace what truly sparks joy.
  5. Connect with All Types of Students: I’d make an effort to engage with those I overlooked before: the nerds, the artists, the drama enthusiasts, and the unique individuals. I’d want to learn about their passions and talents. Think of the incredible friendships that could arise from this openness—many of whom might have been the ones I ignored back then.

As my oldest child prepares for his senior year, I hope he navigates without the burden of regrets. College, he believes, will be the perfect chance to reinvent himself. I agree, and if I could go back, well, I wouldn’t change a thing about my college experience (thank goodness for no cell phone cameras!).

Summary
