In or out. Up or down. Boys or girls. Bacon or the disheartened vegetarian. During an adult birthday gathering, a striking example emerged, presented innocently during a sidebar discussion among women. We formed a semi-circle, voices elevated with the influence of spirits, lamenting how we all know we should consume around 57 liters of water daily—but it’s such a drag! Can’t we just enjoy tasty alternatives instead? (When tipsy, words seem to stretch an extra 14 syllables.) The bewildered men nearby didn’t quite grasp our plight.

“Water is amazing!
It sustains life!
It enhances the appearance of cleavage!
It keeps intimate areas clean for experiences!”

As I pondered, I recognized why we occupied opposing sides in this First World dilemma. Women are constantly bombarded with messages like:

  • “Is your face suffering from adult acne? You need water!”
  • “Are you overeating? Stay hydrated to keep your mouth busy!”
  • “Do you have a headache? Dr. Water can help!”
  • “Feeling off? If you’re unsure, the solution is water.”

Drink liters of it. Forget about food. Worry no more. Invest in a trendy $32 water bottle that countless influencers rave about, fill it up and chug until you feel like your bladder is about to burst.

WATER.

Make it fun! Infuse it with fruits, fizz it up with a SodaStream, drink it warm, or add spices like cayenne and honey—almost fast while you’re at it, but you’ll look and feel fantastic!

WATER!

Wait, what? Sorry, I didn’t catch that over my stomach’s protests as it grapples with an Amazon River’s worth of liquid flooding through me. Can you repeat that after I return from the restroom for the umpteenth time today?

In essence, women dutifully consume their eight recommended cups of clear liquid each day in hopes of enhancing their lives. Men, on the other hand, drink water simply because they’re thirsty and near a faucet. Quite the contrast!
