As the summer rolls in, it’s easy to think that the absence of school means you have free rein to do whatever you please. However, I must remind you: just because it’s summer doesn’t mean the rules go out the window.
Let’s be honest, it’s the 14th time you’ve wandered into our room tonight, and we have an early start at 5 a.m. so let me set the record straight. Your dad gently leads you back to your room and says, “Time to settle down, for the last time.”
“But there’s no school!” you protest, as if we hadn’t just discussed this a few moments ago. “It’s summer break!”
Well, if that’s the case, why don’t you stay up all night and disregard all boundaries? After all, IT’S SUMMER VACATION! I can almost understand why you associate summer with freedom. The long days without school mean no more worksheets, no more timed lunches, and no more sitting silently while someone else gives directions.
But let’s be real, the fighting and chaos in our house is becoming a daily occurrence. Not because new issues are cropping up, but because you seem to have forgotten the same old rules. It’s almost as if summer causes short-term memory loss.
I sometimes wish the rules could be relaxed during this season, but the last time I did that, you both found the giant tub of glitter and created a mess that we are still cleaning up. Not to mention the time one of you climbed the bathroom door and rigged a cup of water to fall on someone’s head. And let’s not forget about the thumbtacks in the booster seats. So, here we are, rules are still in full effect.
To help refresh your memories, I’ve crafted a list of reminders for you. Feel free to refer to it as often as needed; I’ve already shared it with you 26 times because, as we’re learning, short-term memory can be quite the challenge.
- No all-day snacking. We just had breakfast, and you devoured 12 pancakes and 5 eggs. How can you still be hungry 15 minutes later? Boredom is not an excuse to raid the fridge. Get outside, find some dirt to dig in, create art (without glitter), or read a book. But please, stay away from the kitchen. The grocery store has limits!
- Close the door behind you. This rule has been around since you first learned to walk. Why now, during the hottest time of the year, are you forgetting it? If you open the door to go outside, when you come back in, push the door away from you. It’s that simple. If you leave it open, I’ll deduct from your college fund to cover the electricity bill.
- No staying up all night. Even though it’s summer, sleep is still crucial for your growth and well-being. And let’s face it, you turn into a monster when you lack sleep. So turn off the light and stop asking about that special pencil when we’re trying to rest!
- No new freedoms with old rules. Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean you can walk on tables with dirty feet or sneak onto the computer to play games without permission. Those rules remain in place, no matter the season.
- Clean up your messes. If you want to switch games or projects, tidy up after yourself first. A spilled glitter disaster means you know how to clean a table and sweep the floor—so get to it!
- Limit your swimsuit wear. You can’t live in your swimsuit for more than 20 days straight. Yes, they’re comfy, but it’s time for some variety in your wardrobe. I’ll allow five or six days in a row, but then they need a wash!
- Pool time does not replace bath time. I get it; chlorine is fun and makes you feel clean. But remember, it’s still important to wash up after swimming. Trust me, you’ll feel better!
- Consequences for breaking rules still apply. Even though it’s summer, consistency is key. You need an anchor in life, and those rules help keep you grounded.
These rules may seem trivial, but they exist because we want you to have the best family experience possible. Now, go play outside, and let me enjoy some quiet time to reflect on why these rules matter.

In summary, while summer is a time for fun and relaxation, it’s also important to maintain rules that help keep our household running smoothly. Remember, we love you, and these guidelines are in place for your benefit.
