I’ve recently started feeling a sense of wisdom—not in a mystical way like Gandalf, but more like a worldly woman in her prime. It dawned on me that my newfound perspective isn’t solely due to approaching 40; it’s largely because of the life lessons imparted by my 3-year-old son, who sees middle age as just a curious term. Here are some enlightening insights I’ve gained:
1. Hair Washing is Optional
For years, I’ve noticed that my hair looks its finest first thing in the morning, right before my shower. Yet, it never struck me to skip the daily wash and preserve that fresh look! My son has shown me that, much like his tousled locks, my hair can thrive for days without a wash. Just think about the shampoo savings!
2. Books Can Withstand a Little Water
A bit of bathwater on the pages? No big deal! The slight crinkle on page 10 adds character, much like the beloved toys that have been well-used. While we do have our debates over dust jackets—I’m a fan, he’s not—the love for a well-worn book is something we both cherish.
3. Boldness in Creativity
Coloring with abandon yields the most vibrant results. I remember a time in college when I hesitated to use my first lipstick for fear of ruining its untouched beauty. My son, however, dives into coloring with gusto. Whether it’s makeup or crayons, only through bold actions do we truly create.
4. Confidence Equals Style
While women’s magazines often suggest that style comes from adhering to trends and body types, my son teaches me that true style is all about confidence. He mixes and matches outfits with wild abandon and loves himself as he is, never worrying about how others perceive him.
5. The Joy of Cuddling
In my busy twenties, I had become a bit detached. Yet, sharing a bed with my little one has reignited my appreciation for close contact. The simple pleasure of cuddling, whether with my husband or snuggling my son, reminds me of the warmth and comfort that comes from being physically close to those we love.
6. The Art of Patience in Letter Writing
As my son learns to form letters, I find joy in the slow, thoughtful process of writing. It’s a reminder of the beauty of communication and the satisfaction that comes from crafting a letter by hand. In our fast-paced world, it’s refreshing to engage in something that requires patience, like writing to a friend or exploring resources like WebMD for insights on pregnancy.
These lessons from my son have enriched my life in ways I never anticipated. There’s plenty more to discover, but I’d rather spend my time cuddling than writing all of it down.
