As someone in their mid-40s, I recognize that the concept of “cool” varies from person to person. Yet, today while I was organizing my kitchen gadgets (stay with me here), I caught myself humming along to an alternative rock track that’s been stuck in my head for days. I know every lyric. Yes, I’m that cool. In fact, I believe I’m significantly cooler now than I was ten years ago. Here’s my reasoning:
1. I’m Up to Date with Music
A decade ago, my playlist was dominated by children’s tunes. I mean, The Laurie Berkner Band was my jam! Although I still enjoy a few of those nostalgic songs, having teenagers at home means my rides are filled with far more diverse music. No more songs about dinosaurs or trains—just pure alt-rock.
2. Fashion Sense Has Improved
In my 30s, I often struggled to find the right balance between trendy and age-appropriate. Fortunately, as the mom of teens, I have my own fashion advisors. My daughters are quick to let me know what works and what’s a total no-go. I honestly don’t know how women without teenage daughters manage their wardrobes!
3. I Can Rock Dangly Earrings
Growing up in the ’80s, my love for statement earrings never faded. However, when my kids were small, I had to put them aside to avoid any toddler-related mishaps. Now that my kids are older, I can flaunt my favorite accessories again, albeit with some guidance from my daughters to avoid any outdated styles.
4. My TV Choices Have Evolved
I now indulge in shows like ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and binge-watch ‘Mad Men’ on Netflix. I’ve even dabbled in ‘Game of Thrones’—though I have to be careful given the age of my kids. Gone are the days of Phineas and Ferb; I’m completely out of the loop on younger kids’ shows, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
5. Bra Technology Has Advanced
My bras have undergone a significant upgrade. No more flaps! They’re designed for easy access, and I can confidently wear them without worrying about any milk leaks.
6. No More Baby Spit-Up
Thank goodness! My wardrobe is now completely free of dried spit-up stains.
7. I Read Engaging Books
With all the time I spend waiting in the car for my kids, I’ve had the chance to dive into countless bestsellers—none of which have pictures! This has allowed me to expand my reading repertoire significantly.
8. Trends from My Past Are Back
High-waisted pants? I’ve been there. Leggings? Done that. Off-the-shoulder sweaters? You bet! Fashion trends have come full circle, and I’m thrilled to embrace them.
In conclusion, I’ve definitely leveled up in the coolness department over the past decade. Reflecting on my life, I realize that I was actually cooler in my 30s than in my 20s. Even with my youthful tan and voluminous hair in my teenage years, I was just honing my skills. Like a fine wine, I’m only getting better with age. I eagerly anticipate what the next ten years will bring!
