When kids enter the world, they come without clothes, and as parents, one of our main responsibilities is to dress them. Sounds simple enough, right? Wrong. Shopping for children’s apparel today is enough to drive any parent to the brink of insanity, leaving us questioning everything about the experience.
- Why does stepping into a retail store feel like walking onto a pop music video set? The flashy signage! The sequined displays! The overwhelming noise blasting everywhere! All we want is a simple pair of leggings, not a sensory overload.
- Why would I pay $100 for an outfit my child will outgrow in mere months? What am I, a grandparent?
- Why do t-shirts have to be so loud and opinionated, often in ALL CAPS? Yes, we understand—PIZZA IS YOUR JAM! But come on, they’re only seven.
- Why is there even a size 2T option that requires dry cleaning? Two-year-olds are on a mission to cover everything in cheesy snacks, not to be dressed like adults.
- Why do we have to juggle coupons, rewards points, and endless promotional emails just to buy what we need right now? Shopping for kids’ clothes shouldn’t require a personal assistant.
- Why do stores fill the air with overpowering perfumes? Then they make us stand in long lines while we inhale this nonsense, leaving us feeling queasy and in desperate need of a giant pretzel afterward to mask the smell.
- Why are all “nice” clothes so itchy and uncomfortable? We’ve sent people to the moon and invented the Internet, but dressing up for family gatherings still feels like torture?
- And speaking of the Internet, why must we scroll through endless pages of shorts to find what we need? Thanks to this tedious process, my brain is now filled with more information about shorts than I ever wanted.
- Why is everything for girls drenched in pink and glitter? Not every girl is obsessed with pink, and it’s 2015—let’s diversify the color palette!
- Why can’t we find pajamas that aren’t plastered with One Direction, Spongebob, or weird princess-cat hybrids? What’s the deal with that anyway?
- Why do it seem like the designers of kids’ clothing have never met a child? We’re not trying to create runway models; we just want to get them dressed and out the door!
So many questions, so little time!
