Most evenings, if we’re not too worn out, my husband and I might find ourselves in the same room watching a show we both enjoy. By “watching together,” I mean we sit on different couches, exchanging knowing looks—especially when one of us needs the popcorn bowl passed. It’s all quite idyllic, really. But you know what elevates this domestic bliss? Those rare nights when he’s away for work. Yes, I even find joy in my husband’s absence. Clearly, I’m the ultimate wife.
Interestingly, research from the journal Social Forces reveals that many wives feel their quality of life improves when their husbands spend more time at work. And as the saying goes, “Happy wife, happy life.” So it’s a win-win for everyone involved.
Here are five reasons why, despite my love for my husband, I appreciate an evening to myself:
- A Solo Bed Experience: Lucy and Ricky had the right idea with their separate beds! No more heavy legs draped over me, no tussling over the covers or the thermostat. It’s just me sprawled out across a sea of plush pillows, with the temperature set just right at 69 degrees—not 67, because those two degrees can make all the difference. Plus, the bed is free from any remnants of last week’s takeout. Clean air is refreshing, even if it seems trivial.
- Efficient Bedtime Routines: When it’s just me and the kids, “time to wash up” doesn’t turn into “let’s play catch outside” or “who wants a snack?” or the ever-popular “WRESTLE!!” Instead, it means brushing teeth, washing faces, and settling into bed—ideally by 8:00 p.m., though I sometimes struggle to hit that mark, even solo.
- Dinner Simplicity: I love the ability to serve breakfast for dinner. No heavy meals, just simple delights like eggs and toast or cereal with apples. The kids are happy, and it’s quick to clean up. Plus, dessert is usually ice cream—what’s not to love?
- Quality TV Time: Unless it’s one of our designated “quality evenings” together, the TV generally defaults to some sports channel. Even when I sneak away to watch something more my style, like a show on Bravo, he inevitably walks in, turning the channel back to sports. Not exactly my cup of tea.
- Heartfelt Absence: Time apart allows me to miss and appreciate my husband even more when he returns. It’s a classic case of “absence makes the heart grow fonder,” isn’t it? Haha!
So, when’s your next work trip, darling?
